Match Of The Seventies
''Match of the Seventies'' is a British sports documentary television series which aired on BBC 1 in two series between 26 July 1995 and 2 September 1996. Presented by Dennis Waterman it featured highlights of the English football seasons during the 1970s.Hunt p.7 It begins in the summer of 1970, shortly after England's defeat in the World Cup in a season in which Arsenal won the double and concludes at the end of the 1979-1980 season with an increasingly dominant Liverpool side retaining their league title. Each episode featured a string of pop and rock songs which were released around the same time as the footballing events which were being recalled. The series was able to utilise the BBC's '' Match of the Day'' archives. It was part of the growing boom in nostalgia for the decade. Dennis Waterman
Dennis Waterman (24 February 1948 – 8 May 2022) was an English actor and singer. He was best known for his tough-guy leading roles in television series including ''The Sweeney'', ''Minder'' and ''New Tricks'', singing the theme tunes of the latter two. Waterman's acting career spanned 60 years, starting with his childhood roles in film and theatre, and adult roles in film, television and West End theatre. He was known for the range of roles he played, including drama (''Up the Junction''), horror (''Scars of Dracula''), adventure (''Colditz''), comedy ('' Fair Exchange''), comedy-drama (''Minder''), musical ('' Windy City'') and sport ('' The World Cup: A Captain's Tale''). He appeared in 29 films, the last being released in 2020. Danny Baker
Danny Baker (born 22 June 1957) is an English comedy writer, journalist, radio DJ and screenwriter. Throughout his career he has largely presented for London's regional radio and television. Baker was born in Deptford to a working-class family and raised in Bermondsey. From 1977, he wrote for the punk zine ''Sniffin' Glue'', and from there was hired by the ''New Musical Express'', where he worked as a writer, reviewer, and interviewer. Moving into television in 1980, he began presenting London Weekend Television's ''Twentieth Century Box'' and reporting for ''The Six O'Clock Show''. In 1989 he began radio presenting for BBC Radio London and in 1990 joined the newly established BBC Radio 5. In 1997 he was dismissed from the latter, accused of inciting threatening behaviour toward a football referee. That decade, he also began writing for television. The Sweeney
''The Sweeney'' is a 1970s British television police drama focusing on two members of the Flying Squad, a branch of the Metropolitan Police specialising in tackling armed robbery and violent crime in London. It stars John Thaw as Detective Inspector Jack Regan and Dennis Waterman as his partner, Detective Sergeant George Carter. It was produced by the Thames Television subsidiary Euston Films for broadcast on the ITV network in the UK between 2 January 1975 and 28 December 1978. The programme's title comes from the real-world Cockney rhyming slang nickname "Sweeney Todd" used to refer to the Flying Squad by London's criminal fraternity in the mid 20th Century. The popularity of the series in the UK led to two feature films, '' Sweeney!'' ''Match of the Day'' (abbreviated to ''MOTD'') is a football highlights programme, typically broadcast on BBC One on Saturday nights, during the Premier League season.
