Matayos Constituency
Matayos constituency is a sub-county of Busia County in the western province of Kenya. It is one of seven constituencies in Busia County. The constituency is along the Kisumu-Busia Highway and is mainly occupied by the Bakhayo, a sub-clan of the Luhya people. Being part of the lucrative investment grounds, the settlers in the region depend mainly on livestock and grains as their primary source of income. Additional contributions to the local economy include fishing and other agricultural activities. Matayos is the home of Amos Wako Amos Wako (born 31 July 1945) is a former Attorney General of Kenya and the first senator for Busia County from 2013 to 2017. Wako won the senatorial seat after defeating former minister of finance Chris Okemo. He won the senator seat on an Or ..., the longest serving Attorney General in Kenya. Busia County
Busia is a county in the former Western Province of Kenya. It borders Kakamega County to the east, Bungoma County to the north, Lake Victoria and Siaya County to the south and Busia District, Uganda to the west. The county has about 893,000 people and spans about 1,700 square kilometers making it one of the smallest counties in Kenya. Busia is inhabited by the Luhya tribe of Kenya and the Teso of Kenya, and small groups of the Luo. The Luhya communities include the Abakhayo, Marachi, Samia and Abanyala communities. Etymology Busia county is part of the western province of Kenya. It has been commonly inhabited by the Luhya tribe of Kenya the minority tribe of Iteso. Prior to being a county, it was known as Busia district before more districts were created by president Mwai Kibaki. Busia county borders Uganda to the west. Luhya People
The Luhya (also known as ''Abaluyia'' or Luyia) comprise a number of Bantu ethnic groups native to western Kenya. They are divided into 20 culturally and linguistically related tribes. ''Luhya'' refers to both the 20 Luhya clans and their respective languages collectively called Luhya languages. There are 20 (and by other accounts, 21, when the Suba are included) clans that make up the Luhya. Each has a distinct dialect best on thelocality of the speakers.The different dialects shows maturity of the luhya language. The Luhya language can only be equated to the Baganda,Soga and Lugisu language in Uganda. The Luhya culture is similary to Great lakes region Bantu speakers that stretches all the way from their anceral land in DRC. Amos Wako
Amos Wako (born 31 July 1945) is a former Attorney General of Kenya and the first senator for Busia County from 2013 to 2017. Wako won the senatorial seat after defeating former minister of finance Chris Okemo. He won the senator seat on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) being led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. A lawyer by profession Wako served as the Attorney General of Kenya for 20 years (from 13 May 1991 to 26 August 2011). During his reign as the attorney general, Wako was an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, a member of the International Commission of Jurists, Member Council of Legal Education, was a Member Council of International Bar Association.
