Fagamalo
Fagamalo is a village situated on the central north coast of Savai'i in Samoa. It is a sub-village or ''pito nu'u'' of the larger traditional village enclave of Matautu in the political district of Gaga'emauga. The population of the village is 383. Fagamalo is by the sea at the northernmost point of Savai'i. There is a small post office and next door to it is a police station which services the local district. The Tutaga Primary School is at the east end of the village near where a hospital was situated. Savaiʻi
Savaii is the largest (area 1,694 km2) and highest ( Mt Silisili at 1,858 m) island both in Samoa and in the Samoan Islands chain. The island is also the sixth largest in Polynesia, behind the three main islands of New Zealand and the Hawaiian Islands of Hawaii and Maui. Samoans sometimes refer to the island of Savaii as Salafai: This is its classical Samoan name, and is used in formal oratory and prose. Lefaga is a village district on the south west coast of the island of Upolu in Samoa. The American movie Return to Paradise (1953), starring Gary Cooper was filmed at Matautu village in Lefaga. Tui Fiti
Tui Fiti or Tuifiti is the name of a figure referred to in different legends in Samoan mythology and in other parts of Polynesia. In other stories, "Tui Fiti" means "high chief of Fiti." Savai'i On the island of Savai'i in Samoa, a spirit deity called Tui Fiti resides in Fagamalo, a village said to have once been settled by Fijians. The special abode of Tui Fiti was a mound within a grove of large and durable trees called '' ifilele'' (''Afzilia bijuga''). Tui Fiti's abode is called the ''vao sa'', a sacred part of the forest which is tapu in Fagamalo. Tui Fiti is referred to as the ''ali'i'' (high chief) of Fagamalo. There are no other ''ali'i'' chiefly titles in the village where all the ''matai'' chief titles are of orator ''tulafale'' status. Avao is a village on the north central coast of Savai'i island in Samoa. Vaipouli College
Vaipouli College is a secondary school on Savai'i island in Samoa. The college is co-educational, open to male and female students from Year 9 - 13. The college is also known as Salafai College, in reference to Salafai, another name for the island of Savai'i. Vaipouli College was founded in 1922 as an agricultural college for boys during the colonial administration of the country by New Zealand. The college is situated in Matautu, 10-minutes inland from Avao village in Gaga'emauga district on the island's central north coast. The scenic drive to the college passes Itu o Tane Secondary School, plantations and Vaipouli Waterfall and river, the main source of water for the people of Matautu. Reverend George Pratt
George Pratt (1817–1894) was a missionary with the London Missionary Society who lived in Samoa for forty years from 1839 to 1879, mostly on the island of Savai'i. Pratt was from Portsea, Portsmouth in England. He also served in Niue, the Loyalty Islands and New Guinea. In Samoa, Pratt lived at a mission station in Avao Matautu on the north coast of Savai'i island. First Samoan Bible (1860) and dictionary (1862) Pratt was the first person to document the Samoan language. He authored the first grammar and dictionary of the language, ''A Grammar and Dictionary of the Samoan Language, with English and Samoan Vocabulary'', which was first printed in 1862 at the Samoa Mission Press. Subsequent editions were published in 1876, 1893, and 1911. Reprints have been issued in 1960, 1977, and 1984. In addition, the first Bible in Samoan was mainly the work of Pratt. London Missionary Society
The London Missionary Society was an interdenominational evangelical missionary society formed in England in 1795 at the instigation of Welsh Congregationalist minister Edward Williams.
