Matatū is a New Zealand women's professional rugby union team that competes in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition. Matatū represents the South Island, specifically the regions covered by the Crusaders and the Highlanders. They are governed by the Crusaders. They were crowned champions of the 2023 Super Rugby Aupiki season. History Name, logo and colours The team’s name, logo and colours were officially unveiled on 12 October 2021. The name, logo and colours were created by a local artist and designer Morgan Mathews-Hale in partnership with Te Whaka Ako Limited. Matatū is a name gifted by Ngāi Tūāhuriri, which is one of five primary hapū of the Ngai Tahu iwi. The name Matatū, literally meaning "alert or vigilant", has been gifted to symbolise the teams tūmanawa (determined sacrifice), tūaho (legacy), tūhono (connections) and tūtira (unity) in representing Te Waka o Aoraki (the South Island). Super Rugby Aupiki
Super Rugby Aupiki is a professional women's rugby union club competition in New Zealand. Its inaugural season was held in March 2022. It is a steppingstone between the Farah Palmer Cup and the Black Ferns. Aupiki translates as ‘''the ascent to the upper most realm''’. Format Initially the four teams were supposed to have three regular season matches with one home and away game, and one Super Round fixture. The top two teams at the end of the three rounds would contest the final. However, the competition was reformatted as a round robin fixture because of the impact of COVID-19. All the squads were strongly affected with player isolations and COVID-19 cases. The inaugural champion would be crowned based on their competition points after the final round. History The Chiefs Manawa won the inaugural title of the 2022 Super Rugby Aupiki season. They defeated the Blues Women 35–0 in the final round of the competition. Natalie Delamere
Natalie Delamere (born 9 November 1996) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She was a member of the New Zealand women's national rugby union team, Black Ferns 2021 Rugby World Cup champion squad. She also played for Matatū in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition. Rugby career 2014–18 Delamere made her debut for the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union, Bay of Plenty in the 2014 Farah Palmer Cup season, she was still in her last year at Rotorua Girls' High School. She also played for Waikato from 2016 to 2018. 2022 Delamere was named in the Matatū squad for the inaugural 2022 Super Rugby Aupiki season. She debuted for the NSW Waratahs Women, NSW Waratahs in the 2022 Super W season against Fijian Drua#Women's team, Fijiana Drua on 1st April. Georgia Ponsonby
Georgia Ponsonby (born 14 December 1999) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She represents New Zealand internationally and was a member of their 2021 Rugby World Cup champion squad. She also plays for Matatū in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition and represents Canterbury provincially. Rugby career Ponsonby attended Feilding High School. She made her debut for Manawatu in the Farah Palmer Cup in 2017. She received a scholarship and went to Lincoln University in Canterbury. She played two seasons for Canterbury at Number 8 before switching to Hooker in 2020. 2021 Ponsonby was selected for the Black Ferns tour of England and France, but only played in the two test matches against France. She made her Black Ferns test debut off the bench against France in Pau on 13 November. She earned her second cap in the second test match against France.
