Matana Roberts
Matana Roberts (born 1975) is an American sound experimentalist, visual artist, jazz saxophonist and clarinetist, composer and improviser based in New York City. They have previously been an active member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). The works in their multichapter ''Coin Coin'' project have received wide acclaim: '' Coin Coin Chapter One: Gens de Couleur Libres'' was named in multiple ''JazzTimes'' 2011 Critics’ Lists; '' Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile'' was called "stunning" by both the ''Chicago Reader'' and ''SPIN''; and ''Coin Coin Chapter Three: River Run Thee'' was named among ''Rolling Stones Best Avant Albums of 2015. Street performance or busking is the act of performing in public places for gratuities. Velvet Lounge
The Velvet Lounge was a nightclub in the South Loop of Chicago. It started as a jazz club and was called the "dusty epicenter of the Midwest's free form jazz scene." It was located at 2128 1/2 S. Indiana Avenue before moving to 67 E. Cermak when the original building was scheduled for demolition. It closed permanently in 2019. History The club was established in 1983 by jazz saxophonist Fred Anderson who owned the business until his death in 2010. Many live albums were recorded at the club, including a series of performances featuring Anderson himself, on the Delmark label, and 1998's ''Live at the Velvet Lounge'' with Anderson, Peter Kowald, and Hamid Drake. Joshua Abrams (musician)
Joshua Abrams is an American composer and multi-instrumentalist. Career While living in Philadelphia in the late 1980s, Abrams was a member of Square Roots, a street music group that developed into The Roots. He moved to Chicago and played as a bassist with Tortoise, Town and Country, Hamid Drake, and Matana Roberts. Abrams was the house bass player at Fred Anderson's Velvet Lounge and for several years he played a weekly club date with Tortoise's John Herndon and Jeff Parker. He was a member of Mike Reed's Loose Assembly and Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Ensemble. In 2003, he played bass on Godspeed You! Black Emperor's album ''Yanqui U.X.O.''. Doris Duke Performing Artist Award
The Doris Duke Artist Award is undertaken by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and designed to "empower, invest in and celebrate artists by offering multi-year, unrestricted funding as a response to financial and funding challenges both unique to the performing arts and to each grantee". Anthony Fantano ( ; born October 28, 1985) is an American music critic and YouTuber who runs the YouTube channel The Needle Drop and its tie-in website.
