Matam Region
Matam is a region of Senegal (regional capitals have the same name as their respective regions). It is a stark, flat, arid place bounded on the north by the Sénégal River and the south by the Sahelian plain studded with baobab trees. Matam is populated by the tall Pulaar-speaking Toucouleur people who brought Islam to Senegal in the 11th century and gave us the music of Baaba Maal in the 21st century. Department (country Subdivision)
A department (, ) is an administrative or political division in several countries. Departments are the first-level divisions of 11 countries, nine in the Americas and two in Africa. An additional 10 countries use departments as second-level divisions, eight in Africa, and one each in the Americas and Europe. Thilogne
Thilogne is a small town in north-east Senegal with the status of a commune. It lies in the Matam Department of Matam Region, from Kaédi, Mauretania and connected to Dakar via the N2 road. In 2013 Thilogne had a population of just over 10,000. There are twelve mosques, two elementary schools, a middle school, and a ''lycée'' (high school). There is a dispensary and a small market.
