North Andover, Massachusetts
North Andover is an affluent town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. At the 2020 census the population was 30,915. History Native Americans inhabited what is now northeastern Massachusetts for thousands of years prior to European colonization of the Americas. At the time of European arrival, Massachusett and Naumkeag people inhabited the area south of the Merrimack River and Pennacooks inhabited the area to the north. The Massachusett referred to the area that would later become North Andover as ''Cochichawick''. The lands south of the Merrimack River around Lake Cochichewick and the Shawsheen River were set aside by the Massachusetts General Court in 1634 for the purpose of creating an inland plantation. The Cochichewick Plantation, as it was called, was purchased on May 6, 1646 when Reverend John Woodbridge, who had settled the land for the English, paid Massachusett sachem Cutshamekin six pounds and a coat for the lands. Massachusetts House of Representatives' 1st Essex district in the United States is one of 160 legislative districts included in the lower house of the Massachusetts General Court. It covers part of Essex County. Republican James Kelcourse of Amesbury served the district from 2015-2022. Following Kelcourse's resignation in late-June 2022, the seat remained vacant until the election of Democrat Dawne Shand of Newburyport. Rep. Shand took office on January 4, 2023. Following redistricting efforts in 2021, the 1st Essex shifted slightly west. The district now includes the towns of Merrimac and Salisbury; the city of Newburyport; and part of the city of Amesbury. Jamie Belsito
Jamie Zahlaway Belsito (born November 22, 1973) is an American politician representing the 4th Essex district in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Belsito was elected on November 30, 2021, in a special election following former Representative Brad Hill's appointment to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. Belsito is the first democrat to represent the 4th Essex district since 1858, and was sworn in on December 8, 2021. Belsito is the first Arab American woman to be elected to office in Massachusetts. Belsito is the founder of a national nonprofit, thMaternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance based in Washington D.C. She is the great-niece of USAF Technical Sergeant Richard B. Fitzgibbon, Jr., the first American to die in the Vietnam War. Bradford R. Hill (born January 22, 1967) is an American politician and current member of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. Prior to his service on the commission, Hill represented the 4th Essex district in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1999 to 2021.
