Masefield is an unincorporated community within the Rural Municipality of Val Marie No. 17, Saskatchewan, Canada. The community is located on Highway 18, about 10 km southwest of Val Marie. Etymology Masefield was named after John Masefield, a contemporary English poet. History Masefield once contained a store, lumber yard, pool hall, cafe, and blacksmith shop, as well as a three-room schoolhouse and three grain elevators. Crop failures began in 1925, causing many residents to take out new farms at Hays, Alberta, where a new irrigation project was being installed. Although no business operates in the community today, its name survives in the nearby Masefield Pasture, which is co-operatively managed. Val Marie ( 2021 population: ) is a village in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan within the Rural Municipality of Val Marie No. 17 and Census Division 4. It is about 30 kilometres from the Canada-United States border. Considered the gateway to the Grasslands National Park, Val Marie's economy is largely based on wheat farming, ranching, and tourism. Some natural gas has been found nearby. Grasslands National Park (French: ') is a Canadian national park located near the village of Val Marie, Saskatchewan, and one of 44 national parks and park reserves in Canada's national park system (though one of only two in Saskatchewan itself). This national park is north of the U.S. state of Montana and lies adjacent to the international boundary. The park was established in 1981. Shaunavon (, ) is a town in southwest Saskatchewan. At the junction of Highways 37 and 13, it is 110 kilometres from Swift Current, 163 kilometres from the Alberta border, and 74 kilometres from the Montana border. Shaunavon was established in 1913 along the Canadian Pacific Railway line. The town has several nicknames including Bone Creek Basin, Boomtown, and Oasis of the Prairies. Hays is a hamlet in southern Alberta, Canada within the Municipal District of Taber. It is located at the intersection of Highway 524 and Highway 875 between Vauxhall and Redcliff.
