Chief Masconomet
Masconomet, (died 1658) spelled many different ways in colonial deeds, was '' sagamore'' of the Agawam tribe among the Algonquian peoples during the time of the English colonization of the Americas. He is known for his quitclaim deed ceding all the tribal land, which extended from Cape Ann to the Merrimack River, as far inland as North Andover, Massachusetts and Middleton, Massachusetts, and as far to the southwest as the Danvers River, to John Winthrop the Younger, his heirs and all the settlers of eastern Essex County for a sum of 20 pounds, about 100 dollars. Although he could not read or write at the time of the deed, Masconomet understood that he was effecting a union of the remnant of the tribe after decimation by disease (probably smallpox) with the English colonists. He testified to that effect before the General Court of Massachusetts, which was questioning the legality of the younger Winthrop's transactions. Sagamore (title)
Sachems and sagamores are paramount chiefs among the Algonquians or other Native American tribes of northeastern North America, including the Iroquois. The two words are anglicizations of cognate terms (c. 1622) from different Eastern Algonquian languages. The sagamore was a lesser chief elected by a single band, while the sachem was the head or representative elected by a tribe or group of bands. The positions are elective, not hereditary. Etymology The Oxford English Dictionary found a use from 1613. The term "Sagamore" appears in Noah Webster's first ''An American Dictionary of the English Language'' published in 1828, as well as the 1917 ''Webster's New International Dictionary''. Agawam (tribe)
The Agawam were an Algonquian Native American people in New England encountered by English colonists who arrived in the early 17th century. Decimated by pestilence shortly before the English colonization and fearing attacks from their hereditary enemies among the Abenaki and other tribes of present-day Maine, they invited the English to settle with them on their tribal territory. The General Court of Massachusetts protected them by colonial law, along with their land rights and their crops. The English defended them against further attacks. The Agawam had an open invitation to enter Puritan households. Often a small number would show up as dinner guests and were fed. By the time of King Philip's War in 1675, the Agawam had been assimilated. They played no part in the war. Masconomet Regional High School
Masconomet Regional High School, is co-located with Masconomet Regional Middle School in Boxford, Massachusetts, United States and serves the towns of Boxford, Middleton and Topsfield. Masconomet Regional Middle School serves grades 7 and 8 while the Masconomet Regional High School serves grades 9 through 12. The current school superintendent is Michael Harvey. Both schools are located on the same property, and share a cafeteria, gym, auditorium, and buses. Location The school building housing both the regional middle and high schools is located on Endicott Street in Boxford off of Exit 72 on US Interstate 95. Masconomet lies at the intersection of the towns of Topsfield, Boxford and Middleton, the towns which it serves. The property is completely in Boxford, however, the mailing address was in Topsfield (until the 2014-15 school year) due to Boxford's post office being too small to handle all of Masco's mail upon the school's inception.
