Maryland Route 35
Maryland Route 35 (MD 35) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known as Ellerslie Road, the state highway runs north from MD 36 in Corriganville to the Pennsylvania state line in Ellerslie. There the highway continues north as Pennsylvania Route 96 (PA 96). MD 35 was constructed in the late 1910s and was one of the original signed state highways in 1927. The state highway runs through the valley of Wills Creek, an important passage for the railroads beginning in the mid 19th century. Route description MD 35 begins at an intersection with MD 36 (Mount Savage Road) in Corriganville. The state highway immediately intersects Kreigbaum Road, which is unsigned MD 831C. After leaving Corriganville, MD 35 heads north as a two-lane undivided road lined with scattered residences. Corriganville, Maryland
Corriganville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 455. Corriganville is part of the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Corriganville lies north of Cumberland at the confluence of Wills Creek and Jennings Run. Maryland Route 36 passes through Corriganville, and Maryland Route 35 heads north from there to Ellerslie. Demographics Cumberland Bone Cave In 1912, workers excavating a cut for the Western Maryland Railway broke into a partly filled cave along the western slope of Wills Mountain, near Corriganville. A local naturalist, Raymond Armbruster, observed fossil bones among the rocks that had been blasted loose and were being removed from the cut. Keystone Subdivision
The Keystone Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. states of Maryland and Pennsylvania. The line runs from Cumberland, Maryland, west to McKeesport, Pennsylvania, (near Pittsburgh) along a former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) line. The line includes the well-known Sand Patch Grade over the Allegheny Mountains. The east end of the Keystone Subdivision is at Viaduct Junction in Cumberland, where it meets the Cumberland Terminal Subdivision at the east end of the Cumberland Viaduct. The west end is at Sinns, on the west (left) side of the Youghiogheny River at Liberty, where it continues as the Pittsburgh Subdivision through Pittsburgh and on to West Pittsburg. Cumberland Narrows
The Cumberland Narrows (or simply The Narrows) is a water gap in western Maryland in the United States, just west of Cumberland. Wills Creek cuts through the central ridge of the Wills Mountain Anticline at a low elevation here between Wills Mountain to the north and Haystack Mountain to the south. Cliffs and talus of the two mountains' Tuscarora quartzite caprock are prominent within the Narrows. A prominent rocky outcropping at the south end of Wills Mountain in the Cumberland Narrows is known as Lover's Leap. The geological features of the Narrows provide Cumberland a western backdrop of the two mountains with a narrow gap between them. Western Maryland Railway
The Western Maryland Railway was an American Class I railroad (1852–1983) which operated in Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. It was primarily a coal hauling and freight railroad, with a small passenger train operation. The WM became a property of the Chessie System holding company in 1973, although it continued independent operations until May 1975 after which time many of its lines were abandoned in favor of parallel Baltimore and Ohio Railroad lines. Cumberland And Pennsylvania Railroad
The Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad (C&P) was an American railroad which operated in Western Maryland. Primarily a coal hauler, it was owned by the Consolidation Coal Company, and was purchased by the Western Maryland Railway (WM) in 1944. The line ran from Cumberland, Maryland to Piedmont, West Virginia, at both points interchanging with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The railroad's shops were located at Mount Savage, Maryland, also the location of its headquarters. Baltimore And Ohio Railroad
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the first common carrier railroad and the oldest railroad in the United States, with its first section opening in 1830. Merchants from Baltimore, which had benefited to some extent from the construction of the National Road early in the century, wanted to do business with settlers crossing the Appalachian Mountains. Bedford is a borough and spa town in and the county seat of Bedford County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It is located west of Harrisburg, the state capital, and east of Pittsburgh. Sand Patch Grade is an approximately section of railroad track known for its steep grades and curves through the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania and Maryland. Dropping over in about and with grades as much as 2%, Sand Patch Grade is one of the steepest railroad grades on the East Coast. Sand Patch Grade was originally built by the Pittsburgh & Connelsville Railroad (P&C) to connect Pittsburgh and Connellsville, with an extension authorized to Cumberland, Maryland in 1853. Hyndman, Pennsylvania
Hyndman is a borough in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 859. History The first known settler in the area was Samuel Waters, who lived near Wills Creek and built a bridge across it before 1800. Around 1800, Jacob Burkett and Amos Raley started a boatbuilding business at the settlement called Bridgeport. Boats were needed to float grain down to Cumberland, Maryland.
