Maryland Route 343
Maryland Route 343 (MD 343) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known for most of its length as Hudson Road, the state highway runs from Hudson, Maryland, Hudson in northwestern Dorchester County, Maryland, Dorchester County east to U.S. Route 50 in Maryland, U.S. Route 50 (US 50) in Cambridge, Maryland, Cambridge. MD 343 was paved in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The state highway originally passed through downtown Cambridge, ending just west of its present terminus. After the original Choptank River Bridge was completed in the mid-1930s, MD 343 was truncated to Sunburst Highway. In the mid-1950s, the state highway was rerouted along Washington Street to Race Street, where it ended at Maryland Route 16, MD 16. Finally, MD 343 was extended to its present terminus when MD 16 bypassed Cambridge in the late 1960s. Maryland And Delaware Railroad
The Maryland and Delaware Railroad Company is a Class III short-line railroad, formed in 1977 to operate several branch lines of the former Penn Central Railroad in both Maryland and Delaware, United States. These branches were omitted from the system plan for Conrail in 1976 and would have been discontinued without state subsidies. As an alternative to the higher cost of subsidizing Conrail as the operator of the branch lines, the Maryland and Delaware governments selected the Maryland and Delaware Railroad Company (MDDE) to serve as the designated operator. The railroad did not own any of the track it uses until 2000 when it acquired a line between Frankford, Delaware and Snow Hill, Maryland, from the Snow Hill Shippers Association. Maryland Route 341 (MD 341) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known as Race Street, the state highway runs from MD 16 north to MD 343 within the city of Cambridge in Dorchester County. The part of Race Street that is now MD 341 was constructed in the mid-1910s as one of the original state roads and designated as part of MD 16 in 1927. MD 341 was assigned to the road after MD 16 bypassed Cambridge in the 1960s. With 1925 origins as a research station on Solomons Island, the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) is the only scientific research center within the University System of Maryland. In 1973 it became the Center for Environmental and Estuarine Studies and in 1997 it assumed its current name. The center provides a unified focus for environmental research and education in Maryland, United States, with special attention to problems of the Chesapeake Bay, but research programs are undertaken across the US and globally. The Maryland Scenic Byways system consists of nineteen byways that pass through scenic and historic areas across the U.S. state of Maryland, with four of them designated as National Scenic Byways and two of them designated as All-American Roads. Maryland Route 16
Maryland Route 16 (MD 16) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The state highway runs from Taylors Island east to the Delaware state line in Hickman, where the highway continues as Delaware Route 16 (DE 16). MD 16 connects Cambridge with several communities in northern Dorchester County and southwestern Caroline County, including East New Market and Preston. The state highway runs concurrently with U.S. Route 50 (US 50) near Cambridge, MD 331 between East New Market and Preston, and both MD 404 and MD 313 near Andersontown.
