Mary Roberts Coolidge
Mary Roberts Coolidge (October 28, 1860 – April 13, 1945), also known as Mary Roberts Smith, was an American sociologist and author. She was an instructor at Wellesley College before joining the faculty of Stanford University, where she became the first full-time American professor of sociology. She later founded the sociology department of Mills College. Early life Coolidge was born Mary Elizabeth Burroughs Roberts in Kingsbury, Indiana, the daughter of Margaret Jane (née Marr) and Isaac Phillips Roberts. Both of her parents were Indiana farmers who emigrated to Mount Pleasant, Iowa in 1862. Her father would go on to become Professor of Agriculture at the Iowa Agricultural College after 1869, then was offered a similar position at Cornell University in 1873. Kingsbury, Indiana
Kingsbury is a town in Washington Township, LaPorte County, Indiana, just northwest of the intersection of U.S. Route 35 and U.S. Route 6. The town was founded in 1835 and incorporated on March 3, 1941. During 1940 - 1941, the Kingsbury Ordnance Plant (KOP) was built for use during World War II. The plant closed after the war but reopened during the Korean War, closing permanently in 1959. The population was 242 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Michigan City, Indiana- La Porte, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has its own fire department, KVFD (Kingsbury Volunteer Fire Department), and a Greek revival style First Baptist church built in 1851 with its own graveyard and Winchell Cemetery. Dane Coolidge
Dane Coolidge (March 24, 1873 – August 8, 1940) was an American author, naturalist, and photographer. He wrote fiction, non-fiction, and articles featuring the American West. He wrote short stories for magazines and made illustrations. His book ''Rimrock Jones'' was adapted into the 1918 film ''Rimrock Jones''. The Smithsonian Museum has three of his photographs in its collection. He wrote several dozen novels and many tens of short stories. Coolidge was born in Natick, Massachusetts, the son of Francis Coolidge and Sophia (née Whittemore) Coolidge. His father had a farm in Riverside, California. He grew up in Riverside and went to Stanford University and did postgraduate work at Harvard University. Coolidge collected animal specimens for the British Museum, Stanford University, the U.S. National Zoological Park, New York Zoological Park, and the United States Natural History Museum.
