Mary Patricia Shepherd
Mary Patricia Shepherd (4 July 1933 – 20 October 2003) was a British thoracic surgeon who worked at Harefield Hospital in London. She is known for her research on plombage, Membrane oxygenator, membrane oxygenation, and Diaphragm (anatomy), diaphragmatic grafts. Biography Mary Shepherd was born on 4 July 1933 in Forest Hill, London, Forest Hill, London. Her father was George Raymond Shepherd, an engineer, and her mother was Florence May Savile, who came from a medical family. The family spent a year in Maryland when George took up an American work assignment. Mary was awarded a scholarship to James Allen's Girls' School in 1946 and graduated from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1957 after winning several prizes in surgery. After qualifying, she continued to work at the Royal Free Hospital as a house surgeon and a surgical registrar.
