Mary Paillon
Mary Paillon (1848–1946) was a French mountain climber and writer. She is known for her climbs with Katharine Richardson, and for her contribution to the ''Alpine Journal'' and the Ladies' Alpine Club. Biography Early life Mary Paillon was born in Oullins, Rhône, into a family with a background in medicine and mountaineering. Her mother, Jane Paillon, was an experienced mountain climber with successful ascents of Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, and Belledonne to her name. Career Paillon began climbing in the Alps under the guidance of her mother and her brother, Maurice Paillon. She met Katharine Richardson, an English climber, in 1897 when Richardson was climbing the Meije. They agreed to climb together the next year, and eventually became close friends and frequent climbing partners. The Dauphiné Alps (french: Alpes du Dauphiné) are a group of mountain ranges in Southeastern France, west of the main chain of the Alps. Mountain ranges within the Dauphiné Alps include the Massif des Écrins in Écrins National Park, Belledonne, Le Taillefer range and the mountains of Matheysine. Isabella Charlet-Straton
Mary Isabella Charlet-Straton (née Straton; 1838 – 12 April 1918) was a British female mountain climber. She made several first ascents in the Alps with Emmeline Lewis Lloyd as well as the first winter ascent of Mont Blanc with her future husband Jean Charlet in January 1876. The peak Pointe Isabella was named in her honour after she had taken part in its first ascent. Biography Early years Straton was born in Willsbridge, England in 1838. When she was eight years old she moved to Kingston upon Hull and relocated again at the age of seventeen to London in pursuit of a better education. Following the deaths of her parents and sisters, she inherited the Straton family fortune in her twenties, becoming financially independent with an income of roughly £4,000 per year. Meta Brevoort
Marguerite "Meta" Claudia Brevoort (November 8, 1825 – December 19, 1876) was an American mountain climber. Brevoort was born on November 8, 1825, and spent her early years in a Paris convent school. She made a number of important ascents in the Alps in the 1860s and 1870s, but was thwarted in her two greatest alpine ambitions: to be the first woman to climb the Matterhorn, and the first person to climb the Meije in the Dauphiné. Her role-model and rival was Lucy Walker, who began her considerable mountaineering career at the age of 28, in 1859. In 1871, hearing that Brevoort planned an expedition to the Matterhorn in 1871, Walker quickly assembled a party that included the famous guide Melchior Anderegg, and made the summit a few days before Brevoort arrived in Zermatt. Henriette D'Angeville
Henriette d'Angeville (10 March 1794 in Semur-en-Brionnais Р13 January 1871 in Lausanne) was the second woman to climb Mont Blanc. Biography Henriette d'Angeville was a descendant of a French aristocratic family. After the French Revolution, her father was imprisoned and her grandfather executed,Brown 13-25. and the family moved to Bugey in the Rh̫ne-Alpes region. Émile Rey
Émile Rey (August 1846 — 24 August 1895) was an alpine mountain guide from Aosta Valley in Italy. Dubbed "the Prince of Guides" in Courmayeur, he was one of the most renowned guides at the end of the 19th century, making many first ascents on some of the highest and most difficult mountains in the Mont Blanc massif of the Alps. He has been described as "one of the greatest guides of his generation." Biography Émile Rey was born and lived his life in La Saxe, a small hamlet near Courmayeur. By trade, he was a ''menuisier'' (joiner or carpenter), and is known to have contributed to the construction of a number of the alpine huts used at that time by mountaineers to reach more easily the high summits. The Aiguilles d’Arves () is a mountain in the Arves massif in the French Alps. The mountain, comprising three separate peaks (in French ''Aiguille''), is the highest point of the massif, and is located in the department of Savoie.
