Mary Kornman
Mary Kornman (born Mary Agnes Evans, December 27, 1915 – June 1, 1973) was an American child actress who was the leading female star of the ''Our Gang'' series during the Pathé silent era. ''Our Gang'' She was born as Mary Agnes Evans, the daughter of Verna Comer, who appeared in several films, and David Lionel Evans. Her stepfather, Hal Roach′s still-photo cameraman Eugene Kornman adopted Mary after he and Mary's mother were married in 1921. After Peggy Cartwright, who appeared in only four or five ''Our Gang'' episodes, Mary became the leading lady of the series, appearing in more than 40 episodes. ''Stage Fright'' is the 18th ''Our Gang'' short subject comedy released. The series (later known as ''The Little Rascals'') was created by Hal Roach in 1922, and continued production until 1944. Plot Author Fawn Ochletree (Clara Guiol) stages a charity performance of her latest play, a Romanesque epic. The gang and other neighborhood kids are forced into starring in the play, much to the chagrin of the gang. They are unable to remember their lines, and struggle with maintaining their composure during the more serious moments of the melodrama. ''No Noise'' is the 17th ''Our Gang'' short subject comedy released. The ''Our Gang'' series (later known as "The Little Rascals") was created by Hal Roach in 1922, and continued production until 1944. Plot Mickey is in the hospital to have his tonsils removed. The gang decide to visit him, and end up causing all sorts of disasters. They manage to work their way into both the x-ray and operating rooms, and become subdued after inhaling some powerful laughing gas. The kids want to get in on the free ice cream given to patients getting their tonsils removed, and decide to switch places with some boys headed to the hospital. But the doctors catch onto the gang's scheme, and a chase through the hospital ensues. Mickey immediately falls in love with the family's daughter, Mary, and tries whatever he can to gain her affections. He tries taking her for a ride on his goat-powered wagon, and later dresses up as a knight. In the interim, the village blacksmith, "Dad" Anderson, receives a lucrative contract to produce a creation of his: a sail-propelled scooter. The gang is lucky enough to get a hold of a few of these scooters, and happily sail down the city streets. ''Dogs of War!'' is a 1923 silent short subject, the fourteenth entry in Hal Roach's ''Our Gang'' (''Little Rascals'') series. Directed by Robert F. McGowan, the two-reel short was released to theaters in July 1923 by Pathé Exchange. The short was filmed alongside ''Why Worry?'', a feature comedy produced by Roach and starring Harold Lloyd, who makes a cameo appearance in ''Dogs of War'' as himself. Plot Near West Coast Studios in Hollywood, the gang is waging a street war against a rival group of kids; their ammunition primarily consisting of old vegetables. The battle is halted when Mary is called to act in one of the West Coast films. The rest of the gang tries to crash the studio gates and get a role in the picture, but the casting director throws them out. Farina manages to sneak into the studio, however, prompting the other kids to sneak in after her. He later changes clothes with a little girl, and they both get spankings by the adults. A traveling salesman volunteers to entertain the children with his noisemakers and fireworks. ''The Cobbler'' is the eighth ''Our Gang'' short subject comedy released. The ''Our Gang'' series (later known as "The Little Rascals") was created by Hal Roach in 1922, and continued production until 1944. Plot After the gang wreaks havoc in the local cobbler's shop, the friendly cobbler takes them on a picnic, during which his old Model T breaks down. While the cobbler goes to the creek to fetch water for the radiator, the gang tries to do all sorts of repairs on the car, causing more problems. Mickey and Jack accidentally disturb the rest of a sleeping hobo, who then attempts to physically attack them. The gang rigs the car with a sail after their dog chases him off to get the car going again as they sail off into the sunset.
