Mary Jo Chelette
Mary Jo Chelette (May 13, 1939 – May 14, 1984) was an American country singer from Port Arthur, Texas. Along with her two younger sisters she was billed as The Chelette Sisters and was a featured performer on radio station KPAC and later The Louisiana Hayride. As a solo performer, she has the unique distinction of being the first artist to release a record for Starday Records. Her first recording session took place at the ACA studios in Houston on May 21, 1953. Starday single #101 was "Gee, It's Tough to Be Thirteen" with "Cat Fishing" on the opposite side. Billboard reviews for this disc were neutral to unfavorable. She went on to release several more solo singles for Starday including a third answer to the song to ''Mexican Joe'' which received much-improved reviews. Starday Records was an American record label producing traditional country music during the 1950s and 1960s. History The label began in 1952 in Beaumont, Texas, when local businessmen Jack Starnes (Lefty Frizzell's manager) and Houston record distributor Harold W. Daily (better known as "Pappy") decided to form a record label. The Starday name is a combination of Starnes' and Daily's last names. After four releases, former Four Star vice president Don Pierce was brought into the fold and the three men founded the Starday Recording and Publishing Company. Soon after, Starnes sold his shares out to Pierce. In the mid-1950s, Art Talmadge of Mercury Records made Starday a unique proposition, whereby Mercury contracted out all production of Country and Bluegrass music to Starday Records. Port Arthur, Texas
Port Arthur is a city in Jefferson County within the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area of the U.S. state of Texas. A small, uninhabited portion extends into Orange County; it is east of Houston. The largest oil refinery in the United States, the Motiva Refinery, is located in Port Arthur. The population of Port Arthur was 53,818 at the 2010 census, down from 57,755 at the 2000 census. Port Acres, Port Arthur, Texas
Port Acres is an area of Port Arthur, Texas, United States that used to be a distinct unincorporated community in eastern Jefferson County. The community is between Texas State Highway 73 and Farm to Market Road 365 and west of Downtown Port Arthur. In 1923 Tyrrell-Combest Company of Beaumont platted the community on land owned by J. M. Hebert. The community was located near the El Vista Railroad stop. Port Acres had around 1,500 residents in 1949. Residents voted to incorporate as a distinct municipality on a 578-180 margin in 1959; Port Arthur annexed the community instead.
