Mary Hill, Marchioness Of Downshire
Mary Hill, Marchioness of Downshire and ''suo jure'' 1st Baroness Sandys (19 February 1764 – 1 August 1836), was a British peeress. She was born Mary Sandys, daughter of Colonel Martin Sandys (fourth son of Samuel Sandys, 1st Baron Sandys) and his wife Mary Trumbull (only child and heiress of William Trumbull, son of Sir William Trumbull). On 29 June 1786, she married Arthur Hill, Viscount Fairford (who succeeded as 2nd Marquess of Downshire in 1793). The Acts of Union 1800 (sometimes incorrectly referred to as a single 'Act of Union 1801') were parallel acts of the Parliament of Great Britain and the Parliament of Ireland which united the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland (previously in personal union) to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The acts came into force on 1 January 1801, and the merged Parliament of the United Kingdom had its first meeting on 22 January 1801. Baron Sandys
Baron Sandys () is a title that has been created three times, once in the Peerage of England, once in the Peerage of Great Britain and once in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The first creation, as Baron Sandys, ''of The Vyne'', in Hampshire, was in the Peerage of England in 1523 for William Sandys, the favourite of King Henry VIII. It passed through several generations of his descendants until it fell into abeyance circa 1683 at the death of the eighth Baron, in which state it has remained since. The second creation, as Baron Sandys, ''of Ombersley in the County of Worcester'', was in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1743 for Samuel Sandys, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer. This title became extinct on the death of his son Edwin, the second Baron, in 1797. The family estates were inherited by Edwin's niece Mary Hill, Marchioness of Downshire, widow of Arthur Hill, 2nd Marquess of Downshire. Easthampstead Park
Easthampstead Park is a Victorian mansion in the civil parish of Bracknell in the English county of Berkshire. It is now a conference centre. Location Since the demise of Easthampstead parish, the house has been located in the western extremes of Bracknell parish, between the Southern Industrial Estate and Wokingham. It is surrounded by a estate, which, in 1786, had extended to 5,000 acres (20 km2). Some of this land is now taken up by the Downshire Golf Course. Architecture Easthampstead Park is listed by the Department for the Environment as "a building of historic and architectural interest, in Jacobean style with curved gables, pierced stone parapet and stone frontispiece of naive classicism". Edwin Sandys, 2nd Baron Sandys
Edwin Sandys, 2nd Baron Sandys (28 April 1726 – 11 March 1797), was a British politician. He was the eldest son of Samuel Sandys, 1st Baron Sandys, and his wife Letitia, daughter of Sir Thomas Tipping, Bt. He was educated at New College, Oxford, matriculating in 1743. He did not graduate, but was awarded a DCL in 1756. He served as Member of Parliament for Droitwich from 1747 to 1754, for Bossiney from 1754 to 1762 and for Westminster from 1762 to 1770. He was a Lord of the Admiralty from April to July, 1757. On 26 January 1769 Sandys married Anna Maria King, daughter of James Colebrooke and widow of William Paine King. On his father's death in 1770, he succeeded to the barony as the 2nd Baron Sandys, and to estates in Ombersley (including Ombersley Court) and elsewhere. He and his wife had no issue, so his title became extinct on his death, but his estates passed to his niece Mary, Marchioness of Downshire, who was in 1802 created Baroness Sandys with special remai ... Robert Stewart, 2nd Marquess of Londonderry, (18 June 1769 – 12 August 1822), usually known as Lord Castlereagh, derived from the courtesy title Viscount Castlereagh ( ) by which he was styled from 1796 to 1821, was an Anglo-Irish politician and statesman. Lord George Hill
Lord George Augusta Hill (9 December 1801 – 6 April 1879) was an Anglo-Irish military officer, politician and landowner. Hill was the posthumous son of Arthur Hill, 2nd Marquess of Downshire and his wife Mary Hill, Marchioness of Downshire, granddaughter of Samuel Sandys, 1st Baron Sandys. He was born three months after his father's death by suicide. Military and political career He entered the army in May 1817, initially a cornet in the Royal Horse Guards, promoted to lieutenant in 1820. He transferred to the Royal Irish Dragoons as a captain in 1825. In April 1830 he became aide-de-camp to Sir John Byng, Commander-in-Chief of the forces in Ireland, at the rank of major, but on 6 July he took half-pay. In the 1830 general election, Hill was elected MP for Carrickfergus, unseating Sir Arthur Chichester, Bt.
