Marwitz or von der Marwitz is the name of an old German noble family, whose members occupied significant positions in the Kingdom of Prussia and later within the German Empire. History The family history begins in 1259 with Theodoricus de Marwiz. It originates from the village of Marwitz, Neumark, which was the German name of what is today Marwice, Lubusz Voivodeship, in western Poland. Georg Von Der Marwitz
Georg Cornelius Adalbert von der Marwitz (7 July 1856 – 27 October 1929) was a Prussian cavalry general, who commanded several German armies during the First World War on both the Eastern and Western fronts. Early military career Marwitz was born in Stolp (Słupsk) in the Province of Pomerania and entered the Prussian Army in 1875. In 1881 he married Helene von Kameke, daughter of Prussian War Minister Georg von Kameke, with whom he had five children. From 1883 to 1886 he attended the Prussian Military Academy. Until 1900 he commanded a cavalry regiment, at which point he became chief of staff of XVIII Corps. Before the outbreak of the First World War he was the Inspector-General of Cavalry. World War I Marwitz was assigned to the Western Front in 1914 as commander of II Cavalry Corps, and participated in the Battle of Haelen. Georg Wilhelm Von Der Marwitz
Georg Wilhelm von der Marwitz (ca. 1723 - ca. 8 July 1759), also known as ''Black Marwitz'', was a Prussian major, quartermaster, and adjutant to Frederick II of Prussia. Biography In his youth, Marwitz was appointed as a page of Frederick the Great. He later became a favourite of Prince Henry, the king's younger brother. The king became aware of the relationship between the prince and the page. In March 1746, Frederick sent a series of satirical letters to Henry, poking fun at the prince's affection and Marwitz alike. After this spat between the brothers, Marwitz was dismissed from his post. Nonetheless, Prince Henry managed to secure Marwitz a position in the 1st Infantry Regiment. However, not long afterwards, the Prince is said to have "banished arwitzfrom his sight, on account of duplicity and bad behavior." Johannes Nepomuk von der Marwitz ( pl, Jan Nepomucen Marwicz) (20 April 1795 – 29 March 1886) was a German Roman Catholic priest and bishop of Kulm (Chełmno). Marwitz was born in Tuchlin, West Prussia to Alexander von der Marwitz and Marianne née Wysocki. He grew up bilingual German and Polish and attended school in Danzig. He volunteered Blücher's Hussar Regiment No 5 in 1813 in the liberation wars against Napoleon and returned to his father's estate in 1814. Marwitz passed his Abitur in Braunsberg and studied catholic theology and philosophy at the Universities of Breslau, Bonn and in Pelplin in 1825-29. He was ordained on 10 April 1830 at the Cathedral of Pelplin and became a Parish priest at the St. Mary’s Church of Thorn (Toruń) and in Tuchel (Tuchola) in 1832. In 1838 Marwitz became the dean of the Tuchel district, in 1839 episcopal commissioner and in 1843 cathedral canon at Cammin. Johann Friedrich Adolf von der Marwitz (24 March 1723 – 14 December 1781) was a Prussian general during the epoch of Frederick the Great. Biography Born on his family's estate, Friedersdorf, near Seelow, district of Küstrin; †he entered the cavalry regiment Gensdarmes at the age of 17 and was promoted to commander over the years. In the Battle of Zorndorf he led his regiment with distinction and was promoted to major. He was even awarded the highest decoration of Prussia, the Pour le Mérite. In the battle of Hochkirch he fought and led his troops with success. Near the end of the Seven Years' War Prussian troops conquered the elector of Saxonys hunting lodge, Hubertusburg, near Leipzig.
