Martyn Quayle
George Martyn Quayle, MHK (6 February 1959 – 26 August 2016) was a Manx politician who previously held the position of Minister of Tourism and Leisure in the Isle of Man Government and represented Middle in the House of Keys. He served as minister of the Department of Social Care. Martyn Quayle was born on the Isle of Man, the son of George Douglas Quayle and Elaine Evelyn Corrin. He was educated at St Ninian's High School and Ballakermeen High School before joining the Civil Service. He then joined Isle of Man Farmers Ltd, rising to Company Secretary and Managing Director between 1986 and 2002. In the 2001 general election he was elected MHK for Middle at his first attempt and he retained his seat at the 2006 general election. In December 2006, he was appointed Home Affairs Minister before being moved in 2008 to Tourism by Tony Brown. He was later moved to the Department of Social Care. The House of Keys () is the directly elected lower house of Tynwald, the parliament of the Isle of Man, the other branch being the Legislative Council. History The oldest known reference to the name is in a document of 1417, written in Latin by an English scholar, which refers to (the 'Keys of Mann') and (the 'Keys of Law'). There is a dispute, however, over the origin of the name. The word ''keys'' is thought by some to be an English corruption of a form of the Norse verb ('to choose'). However, a more likely explanation is that it is a mishearing of the Manx-language term for 'four and twenty': , the House having always had 24 members. 2011 Manx General Election
General elections were held on the Isle of Man on 29 September 2011 to elect 24 members to the island's lower house, the House of Keys. 60,000 residents were eligible to vote, including 16- and 17-year-olds. The Isle of Man Water and Sewerage Authority (Manx: ''Lught-reill Ushtey as Sornaigys Ellan Vannin'') was the statutory board responsible for water supply and sewage disposal in the Isle of Man. It was formed in 1972 as the 'Isle of Man Water Authority' by the merger of the Isle of Man Water Board and the Water Department of Douglas Corporation. In 1974 it took over the gas production and distribution functions of the Isle of Man Gas Authority, and was renamed the 'Isle of Man Water and Gas Authority'. James Anthony Brown
James Anthony Brown OBE (born 5 January 1950) is a Manx politician, former businessman and electrician who was the Chief Minister of the Isle of Man from 2006 until October 2011, when he stepped down from office following his decision to retire. Early life and career Born on 5 January 1950, Brown was educated at Victoria Road Primary, Castletown and Castle Rushen High School and has since been an electrician, being the proprietor of Tony Brown Electrics in Castletown until its closure in 2010. He was elected as a member of Castletown Commissioners in 1976, becoming Chairman in 1980 before being elected as the Castletown MHK in 1981 at his first attempt. Tynwald
Tynwald ( gv, Tinvaal), or more formally, the High Court of Tynwald ( gv, Ard-whaiyl Tinvaal) or Tynwald Court, is the legislature of the Isle of Man. It consists of two chambers, known as the branches of Tynwald: the directly elected House of Keys and the indirectly chosen Legislative Council. When the two chambers sit together, they become "Tynwald Court". The chambers sit jointly, on Tynwald Day at St John's for largely ceremonial purposes, and usually once a month in the Legislative Buildings in Douglas. Otherwise, the two chambers sit separately, with the House of Keys originating most legislation, and the Legislative Council acting as a revising chamber.
