Martyn Irvine
Martyn Irvine (born 6 June 1985) is a Northern Ireland-born former cyclist, who competed professionally between 2008 and 2017 for the Pezula Racing, Planet X, , , and teams, and rode at the 2012 Olympic Games. He was also a directeur sportif for the team. Irvine is a 7-time Irish national track and road cycling champion cyclist, who represented the Irish National track team in the Omnium event at the World Cup Classics, and was world champion in the scratch race in 2013. He was UCI World Ranked 17th at the end of the inaugural 2010/11 Omnium season, with 315 ranking points. Career He signed with the UCI Asia based for the 2011 season. After the 2012 London World Cup event, he had 470 ranking points. He qualified for the Omnium event at the London Olympics where he finished 13th. 2019 UEC European Track Championships
The 2019 UEC European Track Championships was the tenth edition of the elite UEC European Track Championships in track cycling and took place at the Omnisport Apeldoorn in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, between 16 and 20 October 2019. The event was organised by the European Cycling Union. Scratch Race
A scratch race is a track cycling race in which all riders start together and the objective is simply to be first over the finish line after a certain number of laps. UCI regulations specify that a scratch race should be held over 15 km for Elite Men and 10 km for Elite Women. Shorter distances of 10 km for men and 7.5 km for women may be used for qualifying rounds. Racers line up along the inner sprinter's rail and along the outer railing. The riders take a neutralised lap before the starting pistol is fired for the official start. A lapped rider must leave the race once they are overtaken by the peloton. There are no intermediate points or sprints. One tactic is for a rider, or more often a group of riders, to break away and attempt to gain a lap on the rest of the field. A ''directeur sportif'' ( French for sporting director, although the original French term is often used in English-language media; plural ''directeurs sportifs'') is a person directing a cycling team during a road bicycle racing event. It is seen as the equivalent to a field manager in baseball, or a head coach in football. At professional level, a directeur sportif follows the team in a car and communicates with riders, personnel and race officials by radio. The directeur sportif warns of obstacles or challenging terrain, updates the team on the situation in the race, and provides mechanical help. The car carrying the directeur sportif also usually carries a bicycle mechanic with spare bikes, wheels and parts. It also carries spare water bottles, food and medical equipment.
