Martinsville High School is a public high school located in Martinsville, Virginia. It is the only high school in the Martinsville public school system. It offers such programs as the International Baccalaureate, Piedmont Regional Governor's School, Advanced Placement, and Dual Enrollment classes. During the 2006–2007 school year, a joint program, with the assistance of Patrick & Henry Community College, allowed a select group of juniors and seniors an opportunity to earn their associate degrees (64 college hours) before graduation. Academically, the school performed below the state average during the 2010–2011 school year, failing to satisfy its Adequate Yearly Progress requirement and recording failure rates in the Virginia Standards of Learning of 22% in mathematics, 20% in both writing and science, and 32% in history. Martinsville is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 13,485. A community of both Southside and Southwest Virginia, it is the county seat of Henry County, although the two are separate jurisdictions. Jesse Penn
Jesse Andrew Penn II (born September 6, 1962) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys. He was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 1985 NFL Draft. He played college football at Virginia Tech. Early years Penn attended Martinsville High School, where he practiced football and track. He accepted a football scholarship from Virginia Tech. As a junior, he was named a starter at standup defensive end, becoming one of the leaders on defense, while playing on the same defensive line as future hall of famer Bruce Smith. The Heisman Memorial Trophy (usually known colloquially as the Heisman Trophy or The Heisman) is awarded annually to the most outstanding player in college football. Shawn Moore
Shawn Levique Moore (born April 4, 1968) is an American former professional football player who was a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL) and Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football for the Virginia Cavaliers and was recognized as a consensus All-American. He later returned to Virginia as an assistant coach under Mike London. The Hodgetwins, (born September 17, 1975), also known as the Conservative Twins, are an American stand-up comedy and conservative political commentary duo consisting of twin brothers Keith and Kevin Hodge. The twins started out as YouTubers, but in 2016 branched out to live stand-up comedy shows as well. They were at VidCon 2016, and ''The Root'' named them as the third best black creators at the event. Carl Blake Hairston (born December 15, 1952) is a former professional American football player and coach. Hairston has played in one Super Bowl and coached in another during his 30 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). Among his 15 years in the league since the end of his playing career, the daunting Hairston has spent 11 seasons as a defensive line coach. Piedmont District
The AA Piedmont District is a high school conference of the Virginia High School League that includes schools from Southwest and Southside Virginia, mostly in the Martinsville and the Danville areas. The schools of the Piedmont District compete in AA Region IV with the schools in the AA River Ridge District and the AA Southwest District. Until the 1990s, the AA Piedmont District was a member of AA Region III but was moved to balance the number of schools in the VHSL's AA regions. Due to declining school enrollment, Dan River High School became a member of the A Dogwood District beginning in the 2007–08 school year.
