Martin Ryan (politician)
Martin Ryan (31 January 1900 – 22 July 1943) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He was first elected as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) for the Tipperary constituency at the 1933 general election. He was re-elected at the 1937, 1938 and 1943 general elections. He died while still in office in 1943. No by-election was held for his seat, but his widow Mary Ryan was elected at the 1944 general election for the same constituency. Martin Ryan's family was involved in Irish nationalism and the GAA, his uncle was Canon Michael Kennedy Ryan. Martin Ryan (28 August 1923 – 13 January 2003) was an English professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1940s and 1950s. He played at representative level for and , and at club level for Wigan ( Heritage № 437), primarily at , or . He also made five guest appearances for St Helens ( Heritage № 583) in 1943, plus one appearance for Leigh ( Heritage № 643) in 1955. Ryan is credited with redefining the role of fullback from being a purely defensive role to one requiring counter-attacking skills. Playing career Club career Almost a one club man Ryan made his début for Wigan at and scored a try in the 21–0 victory over Oldham at Watersheddings, Oldham on Saturday 21 September 1940. His last try for Wigan was scored during the 13–6 victory over Bradford Northern in the Championship Final during the 1951–52 season at Leeds Road, Huddersfield on Saturday 10 May 1952. Martin Francis Ryan (October 23, 1874 – January 17, 1935) was an American people, American labor union leader. Born in Coldwater, West Virginia, Ryan began working on the railroad as soon as he left school, and moved to Beaumont, Texas when he was eighteen. In 1899, he joined the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen of America, and in 1903 was elected to its executive. In 1905, he was elected as the union's vice-grand chief carman, then in 1909 as its general president. In 1918, Woodrow Wilson appointed him as a member of the First Labor Mission to Great Britain and France, and in 1924 he was a delegate to the congress of the Pan-American Federation of Labor. In 1923, Ryan was elected as a vice-president of the American Federation of Labor, then in 1929 as the federation's treasurer. From 1928, he was also treasurer of the Railway Labor Executives' Association, and in 1927 he was the founding treasurer of the Union Labor Life Insurance Company.
