Martin P. Hottel
Martin Perry Hottel (25 January 1904 – 30 May 1981), was a decorated submarine commander during World War II who reached the rank of rear admiral in the United States Navy. Martin Perry Hottel was born to Coast Guard Rear Admiral James F. Hottel and Ruby Mallory Hottel (née Perry) in Washington D.C., 25 January 1904. Hottel received his appointment to the United States Naval Academy from Washington State and was admitted 6 July 1923. After graduating from Annapolis in 1927 and receiving his commission, Ensign Hottel reported for duty on board the . Ensign Hottel was promoted to lieutenant (junior grade) on 2 June 1930. LTJG Hottel then completed courses in submarine, torpedo, and chemical warfare, and was subsequently ordered to Submarine Division 3. The Bronze Star Medal (BSM) is a United States Armed Forces decoration awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces for either heroic achievement, heroic service, meritorious achievement, or meritorious service in a combat zone. When the medal is awarded by the Army, Air Force, or Space Force for acts of valor in combat, the "V" device is authorized for wear on the medal. When the medal is awarded by the Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard for acts of valor or meritorious service in combat, the Combat "V" is authorized for wear on the medal. Mare Island Naval Shipyard
The Mare Island Naval Shipyard (MINSY) was the first United States Navy base established on the Pacific Ocean. It is located northeast of San Francisco in Vallejo, California. The Napa River goes through the Mare Island Strait and separates the peninsula shipyard (Mare Island, California) from the main portion of the city of Vallejo. MINSY made a name for itself as the premier U.S. West Coast submarine port as well as serving as the controlling force in San Francisco Bay Area shipbuilding efforts during World War II. Coco Solo
Coco Solo was a United States Navy submarine base and naval air station, active from 1918 to the 1960s. History The submarine base at Coco Solo was established May 6, 1918. The site corresponds with modern-day Cativá in Panama. It was on the Atlantic Ocean (northwest) side of the Panama Canal Zone, near Colón, Panama. Five C-class submarines were based there during 1914–1919. United States Senator John McCain was born in 1936 at a small Navy hospital, at Coco Solo Naval Air Station. The larger Coco Solo Hospital was constructed in the summer of 1941. The area containing it was transferred from the civil part of the Panama Canal Zone to the naval part when Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8981 on December 17, 1941. USS ''S-10'' (SS-115) was a second-group ( or "Government") ''S''-class submarine of the United States Navy. Her keel was laid down on 11 September 1919 by the Portsmouth Navy Yard. She was launched on 9 December 1920 sponsored by Miss Marian K. Payne, and commissioned on 21 September 1922. Following duty off the northeast coast, ''S-10'' visited the Panama Canal area, St. Thomas, and Trinidad and Tobago in early 1924 and completed that year along the northeast coast.
