Martin Hawke, 2nd Baron Hawke
Martin Bladen Hawke, 2nd Baron Hawke (20 April 1744 – 27 March 1805), was a British peer and politician. Background Hawke was the son of Admiral Edward Hawke, 1st Baron Hawke, of Scarthingwell Hall, near Tadcaster, and of Catherine, the daughter of Walter Brooke. He was educated at Eton College and the Queen's College, Oxford, followed by the study of law at Lincoln's Inn. Political career Hawke sat as Member of Parliament for Saltash from 1768 to 1774. In 1781 he succeeded his father in the barony and entered the House of Lords. Edward Hawke, 1st Baron Hawke
Edward Hawke, 1st Baron Hawke, KB, PC (21 February 1705 – 17 October 1781), of Scarthingwell Hall in the parish of Towton, near Tadcaster, Yorkshire, was a Royal Navy officer. As captain of the third-rate , he took part in the Battle of Toulon in February 1744 during the War of the Austrian Succession. He also captured six ships of a French squadron in the Bay of Biscay in the Second Battle of Cape Finisterre in October 1747. Hawke went on to achieve a victory over a French fleet at the Battle of Quiberon Bay in November 1759 during the Seven Years' War, preventing a French invasion of Britain. He developed the concept of a Western Squadron, keeping an almost continuous blockade of the French coast throughout the war. Hawke also sat in the House of Commons from 1747 to 1776 and served as First Lord of the Admiralty for five years between 1766 and 1771. Baron Hawke
Baron Hawke, "of Towton" in the County of York, is a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. It was created on 20 May 1776 for the admiral Sir Edward Hawke (of Scarthingwell Hall in the parish of Towton), responsible for a blockade of all French merchant shipping and the grounding of six French ships, and scattering of the rest, at the Battle of Quiberon Bay. The battle followed an earlier British victory at the Battle of Lagos off Portugal by a fleet under another Admiral's command. The year, 1759, was dubbed for Britain its Annus Mirabilis, or 'miracle year', as France could not follow up on clear victory in the Battle of Sainte-Foy just before the Siege of Quebec for want of reinforcements and supplies from France, and its crippled trade triggered a credit crunch. Hawke's naval conduct then and later as Lord Admiral proved to establish British naval supremacy and in the immediate term determined the fate of New France and hence Canada. Grey Cooper
Grey Cooper (c. 1726 – 30 July 1801) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1765 and 1790 and was Secretary to the Treasury under various administrations. Life Cooper was the son of William Cooper MD of Newcastle upon Tyne. He was educated at Durham School and Trinity College, Cambridge where he was scholar in 1745 and was awarded BA in 1747 and MA in 1750. He was admitted at Inner Temple on 17 July 1747 and was called to the bar. He became a Fellow of Trinity College in 1749. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Rochester from 1765 to 1768. He was an MP for Grampound, Cornwall from 1768 to 1774. He was an MP for Saltash from 1774 to 1784 and MP for Richmond, Yorkshire from 1786 to 1790.
