Martin Furlong
Martin Furlong (born 14 September 1946 in Tullamore, County Offaly) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for his local club Tullamore and was the first-choice goalkeeper at senior level on the Offaly county team from 1966 until 1985. Furlong is the only Offaly player to have won three All-Ireland SFC medals in 1971, 1972 and 1982. He also won an All-Ireland Minor Football Championship in 1964. He won the Texaco Footballer of the Year in 1982 after Offaly's All-Ireland SFC win. In 1989 Martin moved from Clonminch, Tullamore to America following the request of him older brother Tom, to assist him in running his bar. Martin continues to live in New York, two of his sons live in America, one son and his only daughter returned to Ireland. ''Players of the Faithful'' is a documentary on Offaly's bid to stop Kerry becoming the first team to win five consecutive All-Ireland Senior Football Championships in 1982. Loosehorse were responsible for putting it together; it followed on from their documentary ''Micko'' which debuted earlier that year. It first aired on RTÉ One on Friday 28 December 2018 at 9:30 pm. At that time Dublin had just won their fourth consecutive All-Ireland Senior Football Championship and would be bidding for their fifth in 2019. The Offaly county football team represents Offaly in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Offaly GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Texaco Footballer of the Year was a Gaelic football award, created in 1958, that honoured the achievements of a footballer of outstanding excellence. The award was part of the Texaco Sportstars Awards, in which Irish sportspeople from all fields were honoured. The award was presented annually to the Gaelic footballer considered to have performed the best over the previous year in the Football Championship. Voting for the award was undertaken by a select group of journalists from television and the print media. The Electric Ireland All-Ireland Minor Football Championship is the premier under-17 "knockout" competition in Gaelic football played in Ireland. 2017 was the final year of the minor under 18 football championship as it were replaced by an under 17 championship following a vote at the GAA congress on 26 February 2016.
