Martin “Marty” Edward Dempsey (born March 14, 1952), is an American retired military officer who served as the 18th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from October 1, 2011 until September 25, 2015, his ceremonial last day ''(de facto)''; in actuality, his last day was September 30, 2015 ''(de jure)''. He previously served as the 37th Chief of Staff of the United States Army, chief of Staff of the Army from April 11, 2011, to September 7, 2011.
