Martin Camirand
Martin Camirand (born April 3, 1965) is a politician from Quebec, Canada. He was an Action démocratique du Québec (ADQ) Member of the National Assembly for the electoral district of Prévost from 2007 to 2008. Born in Saint-Jérôme, Quebec, Camirand obtained a bachelor's degree in ecology after studies at the Université du Québec à Montréal and became a technician in physical sciences, chemistry and biology for 20 years at the Polyvalente Saint-Jérôme and also served as a coach of an elite league hockey club. He served as city councillor in Bellefeuille from 1999 to 2001 and in Saint-Jérôme from 2001 to his election at the legislature and was a member of the executive committee in the amalgamated city. Camirand was nominated as an ADQ candidate in the 2007 election, after Christian Raymond's candidacy was dismissed by his own party. The 2008 Quebec general election was held in the Canada, Canadian Provinces and territories of Canada, province of Quebec on December 8, 2008. The Quebec Liberal Party, under incumbent Premier Jean Charest, was re-elected with a majority government, marking the first time since the 1950s (when the Union Nationale (Quebec), Union Nationale of Maurice Duplessis won four consecutive elections) that a party or leader was elected to a third consecutive mandate, and the first time for the Liberals since the 1930s, when Louis-Alexandre Taschereau was Premier. The 2008 election also marked the first time that Québec solidaire won a seat. The Parti Québécois (; ; PQ) is a sovereignist and social democratic provincial political party in Quebec, Canada. The PQ advocates national sovereignty for Quebec involving independence of the province of Quebec from Canada and establishing a sovereign state. The PQ has also promoted the possibility of maintaining a loose political and economic sovereignty-association between Quebec and Canada. The party traditionally has support from the labour movement, but unlike most other social democratic parties, its ties with organized labour are informal. Christian Raymond
Christian Raymond (born 24 December 1943) is a French former professional road bicycle racer. In 1970 Raymond won a stage in the 1970 Tour de France. He also competed in the individual road race at the 1964 Summer Olympics. Raymond's 12-year-old daughter was the source of the nickname of the great cyclist Eddy Merckx. Raymond was a rider in the Peugeot team in 1969. When he explained to his daughter how the race had gone, she said: "That Belgian, he doesn't even leave you the crumbs... he's a cannibal." The nickname stuck. 2007 Quebec General Election
The 2007 Quebec general election was held in the Canadian province of Quebec on March 26, 2007 to elect members of the 38th National Assembly of Quebec. The Quebec Liberal Party led by Premier Jean Charest managed to win a plurality of seats, but were reduced to a minority government, Quebec's first in 129 years, since the 1878 general election. The Action démocratique du Québec, in a major breakthrough, became the official opposition. The Parti Québécois was relegated to third-party status for the first time since the 1973 election. The Liberals won their lowest share of the popular vote since Confederation, and the PQ with their 28.35% of the votes cast won their lowest share since 1973 and their second lowest ever (ahead of only the 23.06% attained in their initial election campaign in 1970).
