Martin Allen
Martin James Allen (born 14 August 1965) is an English football manager and former player. He played more than 100 games as a midfielder for both Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United before finishing his playing career with Portsmouth and Southend United. Five years later, he took his first job in management, at non-league Barnet. He has since managed Brentford, Milton Keynes Dons, Leicester City, Cheltenham Town and Notts County. He rejoined Barnet as manager on 16 April 2012 on a short-term, three-match contract succeeding Lawrie Sanchez. In July 2012 he became manager of Gillingham and in the 2012–13 season led the team to the Football League Two title, earning Allen his first promotion as a manager and Gillingham's first divisional title in 49 years. He was sacked as Gillingham manager in October 2013. Martin Allen (born in Wakefield, Yorkshire) is an English playwright and screenwriter. His first play, the one-act ''Taking The Floor'' (1982), formed part of an entertainment at the Bloomsbury Theatre for the launch of a new album by The Passions. In 1983, his play ''Red Saturday'', for Paines Plough, directed by Tim Fywell, toured the UK and was staged at the New End Theatre in Hampstead. It won the 1983 Samuel Beckett Award, and in 1984 transferred to the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs, then under the auspices of Danny Boyle. It was published by Faber. In 1985, as part of the Thames TV Playwrights scheme, he was writer in residence at Hampstead Theatre where his play ''Particular Friendships'', directed by Michael Attenborough, won Thames TV’s best play award for that year. Martin Allen, FSA, is a British numismatist and historian, specialising in medieval English coinage. Allen is the Senior Assistant Keeper of Numismatics at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Education and career Martin Allen earned his Ph.D. at Durham University, with a thesis in archaeology, focusing on the Durham mint. He joined the Department of Coins and Medals at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1997, where he looked after the Corpus of Early Medieval Coin Finds (EMC). He is affiliated with Wolfson College, where he serves as lecturer in the Faculty of History, teaching numismatics and medieval monetary history; he also serves as a College Research Associate. He has an extensive publication record, for which he was awarded a Doctor of Letters (LittD) in 2013. Martin Allen (19 October 1964 – probably before or in 1998) is a British teenager who mysteriously disappeared on 5 November 1979. No trace of Allen has been found and his fate remains unknown. Background Martin Allen and his brothers grew up in a council flat in Hornsey, where their mother was a secretary at Tufnell Park Primary School. When Martin was aged 12, his father Tom gained employment as a chauffeur to the Australian High Commissioner and the whole family moved to a cottage in the grounds of the Australian High Commission in Kensington. Morton David Alpern (March 23, 1922 – February 12, 2018), better known as Marty Allen, was an American comedian, actor, and philanthropist. He worked as a comedy headliner in nightclubs, as a dramatic actor in television roles, and was once called "The Darling of Daytime TV". He also appeared in films, notably the 1966 spy comedy ''The Last of the Secret Agents?''. During his comedy career, Allen also toured military hospitals, and performed for veterans and for active military personnel. Allen was also a philanthropist. He contributed to the American Cancer Society, The Heart Fund, the March of Dimes, and the Fight for Sight, and he served on the board of the Epilepsy Foundation.
