Martin-Little House
The Martin-Little House is an historic, American home that is located in Charlestown Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. History and architectural features This historic structure consists of five sections that were built roughly between 1735 and 1960. The oldest section was built circa 1735, and is a -story, stuccoed, stone, saltbox-form dwelling. A -story, five-bay, stone, main section was added as a wing in 1810. Later additions are the two-story kitchen wing, which dates to the late-nineteenth century, a two-story bedroom wing from the mid-twentieth century, and a one-story, shed-roofed, frame addition from 1960. The oldest section may have served as a stagecoach stop and post office in the mid-eighteenth century. Charlestown Township is a township in Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,003 at the 2020 census. Part of the Valley Forge Christian College's campus, formerly the location of the Valley Forge General Hospital, is located in Charlestown Township. The other part is located in Schuylkill Township. Saltbox
A saltbox house is a gable-roofed residential structure that is typically two stories in the front and one in the rear. It is a traditional New England style of home, originally timber framed, which takes its name from its resemblance to a wooden lidded box in which salt was once kept. The structure's unequal sides and long, low rear roofline are its most distinctive features. A flat front and central chimney are also recognizable traits. Origins The saltbox originated in New England and is an example of American colonial architecture. Its shape evolved organically as an economical way to enlarge a house by adding a shed to a home's rear.
