Martha Louisa Cocke
Martha "Matty" Louisa Cocke (9 October 1855–15 August 1938) was an American educator known for being the president of Hollins College, the first woman college president in Virginia. Early life and education Cocke was born in 1855 to Charles Lewis Cocke and Susanna Virginia Pleasants Cocke, one of nine children. Her father was the superintendent of the Hollins Institute which he had founded, and the family lived on the grounds. She graduated from the collegiate department in 1874. Career Cocke's early professional career was as a secretarial assistant to her father in the superintendent's office. Two years after her graduation she was employed as an instructor of English, French, German, and mathematics. She became registrar and librarian of the school in 1884. Her father actually owned the deed to the school as a result of money owed to him by the trustees. Hollins University
Hollins University is a private university in Hollins, Virginia. Founded in 1842 as Valley Union Seminary in the historical settlement of Botetourt Springs, it is one of the oldest institutions of higher education for women in the United States. Hollins enrolls about 800 undergraduate and graduate students. As Virginia's first chartered women's college, undergraduate programs are female-only. Men are admitted to the graduate-level programs. Hollins is known for its undergraduate and graduate writing programs, which have produced Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Annie Dillard, former U.S. poet laureate Natasha Trethewey, and Henry S. Taylor. Virginia Women's Monument
The Virginia Women's Monument is a state memorial in Richmond, Virginia commemorating the contributions of Virginia women to the history of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States of America. Located on the grounds of the Virginia State Capitol, the monument is officially titled Voices from the Garden: The Virginia Women's Monument and features life-sized bronze statues of eleven Virginia women placed in a small granite plaza. The monument was first proposed in 2009 and established by joint resolution of the Virginia General Assembly in 2010. An 18-member commission, along with input from the Library of Virginia and professors of women's history, selected the women to be honored with statues sculpted by StudioEIS in Brooklyn, New York. The granite plaza and Wall of Honor were opened in October 2018 and the monument was officially unveiled with the first seven completed statues on October 14, 2019.
