Marshall Supercharger
The Marshall supercharger (also known as the Godfrey supercharger) was a Roots-type supercharger based on a patent by John Wilmot Marshall in 1933 Company History The Marshall superchargers were initially manufactured by Marshall Drew and Co Ltd in the 1930s and marketed for increasing car performance. Toward the end of the 1930s Marshall superchargers were listed by Sir George Godfrey and Partners (Holdings) Ltd of Hanworth, Middlesex, made by them to the designs of J.W. Marshall. Godfrey continued to list the Marshall cabin blower until about 1951, after which they listed it as the Godfrey cabin supercharger. In 1969 Sir George Godfrey and Partners (Holdings) Ltd merged with James Howden & Company Ltd under James Howden and Godfrey Ltd. One outcome of this was the merging of compressor interests, as Howden Wade Ltd carried the rights to the Wade supercharger. Roots-type Supercharger
The Roots-type blower is a positive displacement lobe pump which operates by pumping a fluid with a pair of meshing lobes resembling a set of stretched gears. Fluid is trapped in pockets surrounding the lobes and carried from the intake side to the exhaust. The most common application of the Roots-type blower has been the induction device on two-stroke diesel engines, such as those produced by Detroit Diesel and Electro-Motive Diesel. Roots-type blowers are also used to supercharge four-stroke Otto cycle engines, with the blower being driven from the engine's crankshaft via a toothed or V-belt, a roller chain or a gear train. Short Sperrin
The Short SA.4 Sperrin (named after the Sperrin Mountains) was a British jet bomber design of the early 1950s, built by Short Brothers and Harland of Belfast. It first flew in 1951. From the onset, the design had been viewed as a fall-back option in case the more advanced strategic bomber aircraft, then in development to equip the Royal Air Force's nuclear-armed V bomber force, experienced delays; the Sperrin was not put into production because these swept-wing designs, such as the Vickers Valiant, were by then available. As their usefulness as an interim bomber aircraft did not emerge, a pair of flying prototypes were instead used to gather research data on large jet aircraft and to support the development of other technologies, such as several models of jet engines. Superchargers
In an internal combustion engine, a supercharger compresses the intake gas, forcing more air into the engine in order to produce more power for a given displacement. The current categorisation is that a supercharger is a form of forced induction that is mechanically powered (usually by a belt from the engine's crankshaft), as opposed to a turbocharger, which is powered by the kinetic energy of the exhaust gasses. However, up until the mid-20th century, a turbocharger was called a "turbosupercharger" and was considered a type of supercharger. The first supercharged engine was built in 1878, with usage in aircraft engines beginning in the 1910s and usage in car engines beginning in the 1920s. In piston engines used by aircraft, supercharging was often used to compensate for the lower air density at high altitudes. Rotinoff Motors
Rotinoff Motors Ltd was a British commercial vehicle manufacturer based in Colnbrook in western London. The company was founded in 1952 by the Belarusian émigré George Rotinoff. The Rotinoff company specialized in the production of ballast tractors and heavy transport vehicles. The vehicles of Rotinoff were widely used in Europe as tractors for tank transporters. In the Swiss army, the Rotinoff Atlantic GR 7 was used from 1958 - 1991 by the tank troops to haul Centurion tanks. More Rotinoff transporters were in use as road trains in Australia for the transport of cattle. George Rotinoff died in 1959, and the brand name Rotinoff was then discontinued. Vickers Vanguard
The Vickers Vanguard was a short/medium-range turboprop airliner designed and produced by the British aircraft manufacturer Vickers-Armstrongs. The Vanguard was developed during the mid-to-late 1950s in response to a specification issued by British European Airways (BEA) for a 100 seat airliner; Vickers decided to design such an airliner as a follow-up to the existing Viscount series, the principal difference from which being an expanded airframe that provided considerably more internal volume. Avro Vulcan
The Avro Vulcan (later Hawker Siddeley Vulcan from July 1963) is a jet-powered, tailless, delta-wing, high-altitude, strategic bomber, which was operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF) from 1956 until 1984. Aircraft manufacturer A.V. Roe and Company ( Avro) designed the Vulcan in response to Specification B.35/46. The Grumman Gulfstream I (company designation G-159) is a twin-turboprop business aircraft. It first flew on August 14, 1958. Design and development After first rejecting an idea to develop the Grumman Widgeon as an executive transport, the company studied producing an executive transport based on a turbine-powered variant of the naval utility transport Grumman TF-1 Trader. The company had already determined that any new aircraft would have to be turboprop-powered and the Rolls-Royce Dart engine was chosen. Fairchild F-27
The Fairchild F-27 and Fairchild Hiller FH-227 were versions of the Fokker F27 Friendship twin-engined turboprop passenger aircraft manufactured under license by Fairchild Hiller in the United States. The Fairchild F-27 was similar to the standard Fokker F27, while the FH-227 was an independently developed stretched version. The Vickers Viscount is a British medium-range turboprop airliner first flown in 1948 by Vickers-Armstrongs. Wade Supercharger
The Wade supercharger was a Roots-type supercharger designed for internal combustion engines and produced from 1947 by the newly formed Wade Engineering Ltd, of Gatwick Airport, Horley, Surrey. The name 'WADE' comes from Winslett And DEnsham, after Bryan Winslett and Costin Densham. Company History At the end of the war Leslie Mark Ballamy had the idea of repurposing war surplus Marshall cabin air blowers as superchargers for cars. Initially running under his own name, he left the business in 1946 and it was reorganised as North Downs Engineering Co (Nordec). Several members of NORDEC, including the chief designer and the managing director, Marcus Chambers, decided to make their own compressors and to do this created Wade Engineering Ltd at Gatwick airport late in 1947.
