Marsh Ecology Award
The Marsh Ecology Award is a prize awarded annually from 1996 onwards to recognise outstanding recent discovery or development which has had a significant impact on the development of the science of ecology or its application. The Award is an honorarium of £1,000 and is open to ecologists from anywhere in the world. The award is given by the Marsh Charitable Trust and the British Ecological Society in cooperation. Ecology
Ecology () is the study of the relationships between living organisms, including humans, and their physical environment. Ecology considers organisms at the individual, population, community, ecosystem, and biosphere level. Ecology overlaps with the closely related sciences of biogeography, evolutionary biology, genetics, ethology, and natural history. Ecology is a branch of biology, and it is not synonymous with environmentalism. Jeremy Thomas (scientist)
Jeremy Ambler Thomas OBE is a British ecologist noted for his work on the population, community, functional and evolutionary ecology of insects. Thomas is an emeritus professor of ecology and professorial fellow of New College, University of Oxford. He graduated from Cambridge University in 1969 and undertook a PhD based at The Nature Conservancy’s ( NERC) Monks Wood Experimental Station. He spent 30 years leading research groups and later sections at NERC’s Institute of Terrestrial Ecology (ITE) and Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) labs. He was also director and head of Station of NERC’s CEH Dorset laboratory (2003-2007). In 2007, Thomas moved to Oxford as professor of ecology. Julia Koricheva
Julia Koricheva is an ecologist in the UK. She is professor of ecology at Royal Holloway, University of London and she researches ecosystem services in forests, the interactions between insects and plants and is an expert in meta-analysis. Education and career Koricheva is originally from Russia and did a BSc in Zoology and Entomology at Saint Petersburg State University and then a PhD at the University of Turku in Finland, looking at the effects of air pollution on the interactions between birch trees and insect herbivores. She moved to Switzerland to work as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Zurich before returning to Finland. Koricheva then moved to the Swedish Agricultural University before becoming a lecturer at Royal Holloway, University of London in 2004, where in 2011 she was appointed professor of ecology. Kathy Willis
Katherine Jane Willis, Baroness Willis of Summertown, (born 16 January 1964) is a British biologist, academic and life peer, who studies the relationship between long-term ecosystem dynamics and environmental change. She is Professor of Biodiversity in the Department of Zoology at the University of Oxford, and an adjunct professor in biology at the University of Bergen. In 2018 she was elected Principal of St Edmund Hall, and took up the position from 1 October. She held the Tasso Leventis Chair of Biodiversity at Oxford and was founding Director, now Associate Director, of the Biodiversity Institute Oxford. Sandra Lavorel (born 1965 in Lyon) is a French ecologist specializing in functional ecology. She is a research director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research ( CNRS) where she works at the Alpine Ecology Laboratory in Grenoble, France. She has been a member of the French Academy of sciences since 2013 In 2020, she was honoured to be an international member of the National Academy of Sciences. Lynne Boddy
Lynne Boddy is a Professor of Microbial Ecology at Cardiff University. She works on the ecology of wood decomposition, including synecology and autecology. She won the 2018 Learned Society of Wales Frances Hoggan Medal. Early life and education Boddy studied biology at the University of Exeter. She became interested in mycology because she was taught by the notable mycologist John Webster and encountered the fungus '' Serpula lacrimans'' causing dry rot in her student accommodation. Jane Memmott
Jane Memmott Hon.FRES is an ecologist and entomologist from the United Kingdom. She is professor of ecology at the University of Bristol. Her research focuses on community ecology and she is an expert on the interactions between insect pollinators and plants. Education and career Memmott attended the University of Leeds where she studied zoology in the early 1980s. She continued her studies at Leeds, where she eventually obtained her PhD. She also worked on the community ecology of phlebotomine sandflies, doing fieldwork in Costa Rica. As a postdoctoral researcher she constructed the first food webs in tropical ecosystems, looking at plants, leaf-miners, and parasitoids, working with Charles Godfray. She furthermore did research of invasive plants in New Zealand. In 1996 Memmott transferred to the University of Bristol as a lecturer.
