Marsden Medal
The Marsden Medal is a yearly award given by the New Zealand Association of Scientists. It is named after Sir Ernest Marsden and honours "a lifetime of outstanding service to the cause or profession of science, in recognition of service rendered to the cause or profession of science in the widest connotation of the phrase." It rivals the Rutherford Medal from the Royal Society of New Zealand. New Zealand Association Of Scientists
The New Zealand Association of Scientists is an independent association for scientists in New Zealand. It was founded in 1941 as the New Zealand Association of Scientific Workers, and renamed in 1954Gregory, G., 2013. Not to be forgotten: New Zealand Association of Scientific Workers. It differs from the Royal Society of New Zealand in being an independent non-profit incorporated society and registered charity, rather than being constituted by an Act of Parliament. Industrial Research Limited (IRL) was a Crown Research Institute of New Zealand that was established in 1992 and merged into Callaghan Innovation, a new Crown entity, on 1 February 2013. IRL provided research, development and commercialisation services aimed at fostering industry development, economic growth and business expansion. It was established when the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research was disbanded and its staff and assets redistributed to form the research institutes in 1992. Timothy George Haskell is a New Zealand scientist. Career and impact Haskell started his career at the Physics and Engineering Laboratory of DSIR (New Zealand) and remained with them through its evolution to Industrial Research Limited (IRL). He shifted to Callaghan Innovation in 2012. He worked with Bill Robinson (scientist), Bill Robinson on the development and installation of earthquake base isolation foundations for Te papa, Te Papa. However, he is best known for his development of "Camp Haskell" - a containerised facility for working on the Sea ice of McMurdo Sound. He had equipment mounted on the Erebus Glacier Tongue when it calved in 1990. He had just finished a field trip to the glacier in 2010 when it next calved. Kevin Russel Tate (8 April 1943 – 22 January 2018) was a New Zealand soil chemist, ecologist and climate scientist. Early life and family Born in Lower Hutt on 8 April 1943, Tate was the son of Dudley Tate and Hazel Winifred Tate (née Jackson-Hughes). He was educated at Hutt Valley High School from 1956. Scientific career Tate studied chemistry at Victoria University of Wellington, graduating BSc in 1964, and MSc the following year. Peter Barrett (geologist)
Peter John Barrett (born 11 August 1940) is a New Zealand geologist who came to prominence after discovering the first tetrapod fossils in Antarctica in 1967. Early life and family Barrett was born in Hamilton on 11 August 1940, and educated at Hamilton High School. He went on to study at Auckland University College from 1958 to 1962, graduating Bachelor of Science in 1961, and Master of Science in 1963. The title of his master's thesis was ''The Te Kuiti group in the Waitomo-Te Anga area : a study of structures, sedimentation and paleogeography of calcareous sediments''.
