Marple is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. It is on the River Goyt, south-east of Manchester, north of Macclesfield and south-east of Stockport. In United Kingdom Census 2011, 2011, it had a population of 23,686. Within the boundaries of the Historic counties of England, historic county of Cheshire, the town lies along the Peak Forest Canal which contains the Marple Lock Flight and Marple Aqueduct. The Roman Lakes, to the south-east of the town centre, attracts anglers and walkers. The town is served by two railway stations: Marple railway station, Marple and Rose Hill Marple railway station, Rose Hill Marple, providing access to the National Rail, rail network in Greater Manchester and beyond. It is also close to the Middlewood Way, a shared use path following the former Macclesfield, Bollington and Marple Railway line south from Rose Hill to Macclesfield. Marple Bridge is a district of Marple, Greater Manchester, Marple in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, Greater Manchester, England; it is sited on the River Goyt, which runs through the centre of the village. Historic counties of England, Historically part of the civil parish of Glossop, Derbyshire, it was included in the new parish of Ludworth and Chisworth in 1866. Ludworth, Greater Manchester, Ludworth became a separate parish in 1896 and was abolished in 1936, when the former parish was transferred to Cheshire and amalgamated into Marple, Greater Manchester, Marple Urban District. In 1974, the urban district was abolished and Marple Bridge became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport in the county of Greater Manchester. Marple Railway Station
Marple railway station is on the Hope Valley Line and serves Marple, in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. It is south-east of Manchester Piccadilly. The station, opened in 1865 by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway, was demolished and rebuilt in 1970. It is managed and served by Northern Trains, who provide two trains per hour in each direction. The other station in Marple is Rose Hill Marple, on a spur of the Hope Valley Line which, until 1970, continued towards Macclesfield. Description The station is to the east of Marple, near Marple Bridge and close to Brabyns Park and the Peak Forest Canal. The A626 runs over a bridge next to the station and provides access to it. Marple Township is a township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States. It contains the census designated place of Broomall. The population was 23,743 at 2015. ZIP codes include mainly 19008, but also partially 19064 and 19063. The township is run by Marple Township board of commissioners. History The Delaware County area was first settled by Quakers who came to Pennsylvania by the Delaware River on September 29, 1683. The ship they used was called the ''Endeavor.'' Marple Township was originally settled in 1684 and was recognized as a township in the same year. The original spelling of the township was Marpool, but the spelling was changed to Marple in the Thomas Holme map of 1687. The Marpool spelling may have been an error. One of the settlers who arrived on the ''Endeavor'' was Thomas Massey. He obtained a 300-acre plantation in the township from William Penn. Carole Frances Marple (''née'' Whitelaw) (born 24 December 1941) is a former Australian politician. She was the Labor member for Altona in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1992 to 1996. Carole Frances Whitelaw was born at Benalla, north-east of Melbourne, daughter of farmer John Lindsay Whitelaw and Grace (née Cartwright). She was educated at Brighton, becoming a primary teacher specialising in helping children with learning difficulties. A member of the Australian Labor Party, she ran as a candidate for several federal elections, contesting the safe Coalition seat of Indi in 1980 and 1983 and running in the unwinnable fourth position on the Victorian Labor Senate ticket in 1984 and 1990. Miss Marple is a fictional character in Agatha Christie's crime novels and short stories. Jane Marple lives in the village of St. Mary Mead and acts as an amateur consulting detective. Often characterized as an elderly spinster, she is one of Christie's best-known characters and has been portrayed numerous times on screen.
