Marooning
Marooning is the intentional act of abandoning someone in an uninhabited area, such as a desert island, or more generally (usually in passive voice) to be marooned is to be in a place from which one cannot escape. The word is attested in 1699, and is derived from the term maroon, a word for a fugitive slave, which could be a corruption of Spanish ''cimarrón'' (rendered as "symeron" in 16th–17th century English), meaning a household animal (or slave) who has "run wild". The practice was a penalty for crewmen, or for captains at the hands of a crew in cases of mutiny. Generally, a marooned man was set on a deserted island, often no more than a sand bar at low tide. He would be given some food, a container of water, and a loaded pistol so he could die by suicide if he desired. ''Marooned'' is a 1969 American science fiction film directed by John Sturges and starring Gregory Peck, Richard Crenna, David Janssen, James Franciscus and Gene Hackman about three astronauts who are trapped and slowly suffocating in space. It was based on the 1964 novel ''Marooned'' by Martin Caidin. While the original novel was based on the single-pilot Project Mercury, the film depicted an Apollo command and service module with three astronauts and a space station resembling Skylab. ''Marooned'' is an hour-long fly-on-the-wall documentary which followed the success of the Westmeath senior football team that won the 2004 Leinster Senior Football Championship Final, the county's first ever title at senior level, under the guidance of Páidí Ó Sé. The documentary focused on Ó Sé who had taken over as Westmeath manager after departing Kerry in acrimonious circumstances. ''Marooned'' is a 1964 science fiction thriller novel by Martin Caidin, about a crewed spacecraft stranded in Earth orbit, oxygen running out, and only an experimental craft available to attempt a rescue. A film based on the novel led Caidin to prepare a revised version of it in 1968. Marooned are a U.S.-based ''a cappella'' Irish folk/shanty band based in Las Vegas. They were formed in 1995. History Marooned first performed at the Las Vegas Age of Chivalry Renaissance Festival in 1995. Their influence was recognized by inclusion and citation of their version of "Look at the Coffin" in the Mallory & McCall's Irish Pub Songbook. They performed at a number of small festivals and local venues until the release of their self-titled debut CD. Their first CD, was recorded at Studio on the Hill in Poway, California over the course of a weekend. The band began touring further, heading to Northern California. In 1999 Marooned (along with the Jackstraws) appeared at the final A&E Networks tall ship battle to promote the new Horatio Hornblower movies.
