Maroona Railway Station
Maroona is the junction station between what is the main western railway line and the branch line to Portland, Victoria, Australia. A number of sidings are provided at this station which are still in use. The platform and station building remain at Maroona with track access still available to one side of the platform. Portland Railway Line
The Portland railway line is a railway line in south-western Victoria, Australia. It runs from the main Western standard gauge line at Maroona through Hamilton to the port town of Portland. History The line was built as ( broad gauge) from Ararat to Maroona, Hamilton, Heywood and Portland, and opened in 1877. It was converted to standard gauge in 1995. Freight operator Pacific National indefinitely suspended all rail services to Portland in 2004, affecting local companies including Portland Aluminium, transport company Kalari, and freight broker Anchor Logistics. Portland container traffic had been conveyed between Maroona and Portland on grain services twice a week, but Pacific National said that the drought meant there were no trains to attach the loading to. On the route the price differential between rail and road was $12.97 per tonne in rail's favour. Western Standard Gauge Line
The Western standard gauge railway line is a standard-gauge railway line in western Victoria, Australia. Completed in 1995, it forms part of the Melbourne–Adelaide rail corridor and serves as the principal interstate rail link between Victoria and the western states. The line replaced a number of former broad gauge routes which were gauge converted, and today sees both intrastate and interstate freight traffic, as well as the twice weekly (in each direction) '' The Overland'' passenger service. Major towns on the route include Geelong, Ararat, Horsham and Dimboola. History The first inter-capital link between Melbourne and South Australia was completed in 1887 when the Victorian Railways line was extended to Serviceton on the state border. Hamilton Railway Station, Victoria
Hamilton is a railway station located on the Ararat - Portland railway in the town of Hamilton, Victoria, Australia. Today the station is now used only for through trains, and the large station building is used only to serve bus passengers, although the disused platform remains in reasonable condition. History The railway to Hamilton opened in October 1877, in December that year the line was extended south to the final terminus of Portland. Hamilton became a major railway station with extensive freight facilities and was the junction for several branch lines: * To Coleraine opened in 1888. * To Penshurst and Koroit in 1890. * To Cavendish in 1915, extended to Balmoral in 1920. The first two branch lines left the main line at Coleraine Junction, located a short distance south of Hamilton station itself.
