Mount Maroon
Mount Maroon is a mountain in South East Queensland that is part of the McPherson Range. The mountain rises to above sea level about 12 km west of Rathdowney. The original indigenous name for the mountain is Wahlmoorum which means sand goanna in the Yuggera language. Another aboriginal name documented for the mountain is Dahl-moor-uhn, which means "big fellow waterhole bunyip" attributed to two small yet deep lagoons, on the summit of the mountain. The earliest photograph of the lagoons are from 1910. The current name for the mountain comes from the first grazing property in the area called Maroon. Mount Maroon consists mainly of rhyolite and has its geological origins in the cooling of molten rock beneath the surface. The mountain was first gazetted in 1938 as Mount Maroon National Park. Maroon 5 is an American pop rock band from Los Angeles, California. Maroon Town, Sierra Leone, is a district in the settlement of Freetown, a colony founded in West Africa by Great Britain. History Following their defeat in the American Revolutionary War, the British had resettled African Americans in the British colony of Nova Scotia (now a province of Canada). However, many did not like the colder climate and poor treatment they received, so in 1792, 1192, about 1200 or 1800 of them emigrated to Sierra Leone. This move was welcomed by the Sierra Leone Company, which wanted to reestablish a colony, but lacked colonists. Once there, the Nova Scotian Settlers (as they came to be called) and Sierra Leone Company surveyors founded Freetown. Marooning is the intentional act of abandoning someone in an uninhabited area, such as a desert island, or more generally (usually in passive voice) to be marooned is to be in a place from which one cannot escape. The word is attested in 1699, and is derived from the term maroon, a word for a fugitive slave, which could be a corruption of Spanish ''cimarrón'' (rendered as "symeron" in 16th–17th century English), meaning a household animal (or slave) who has "run wild". The Maroon Dam is a rock and earth-fill embankment dam with an un-gated spillway across the Burnett Creek that is located in the South East region of Queensland, Australia. The main purpose of the dam is for irrigation of the Scenic Rim Regional Council region. The impounded reservoir is also called Maroon Dam.
