Marmaduke School District is a school district based in Marmaduke, Arkansas. The school district provides elementary and secondary education from pre school through grade 12 for approximately 800 students and employs more than 120 faculty and staff on a full time equivalent basis. The district encompasses of land in Greene County, Arkansas, and supports all or portions of the communities of Marmaduke and Lafe. Kindergarten through 6th grade is in the Elementary building. Marmaduke is a city in Greene County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,111 in 2010. History The town of Marmaduke was named for Confederate Major General John Sappington Marmaduke, who later served as governor of Missouri. Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 42,090. The county seat is Paragould, which sits atop Crowley's Ridge. Greene County is included in Jonesboro–Paragould Combined Statistical Area. History The first settler in the area was Benjamin Crowley, who arrived from Kentucky in 1821 and made his home about west of Paragould. Greene County was formed on 5 November 1833 out of portions of Lawrence County and originally contained parts of present Clay and Craighead counties. The county was named for Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene. The first county seat was in Benjamin Crowley's home. By 1836, when Arkansas became a state, the county seat was located in a settlement called "Paris" (not to be confused with present-day Paris, Arkansas). Lafe is a town in Greene County, Arkansas, United States on Crowley's Ridge. The population was 448 at the 2010 census, up from 385 in 2000. History The first settler of Lafe was Herman Toelken, a German immigrant who had been living in New Haven, Missouri, and was seeking new opportunities in an unsettled area. Toelken began cutting railroad ties for the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern (later Missouri Pacific) railroad in order to save enough money to purchase land and send for his family. When Toelken was settled he began advertising in a Minneapolis German newspaper seeking other German Lutherans to come to the area. Several families responded to this advertisement, and an assortment of German immigrant families followed him from Franklin County, Missouri.
