Marlborough ( , ) is a market town and Civil parishes in England, civil parish in the England, English Counties of England, county of Wiltshire on the A4 road (England), Old Bath Road, the old main road from London to Bath, Somerset, Bath. The town is on the River Kennet, 24 miles (39 km) north of Salisbury and 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Swindon. History The earliest sign of human habitation is the Marlborough Mound, a prehistoric tumulus in the grounds of Marlborough College. Recent radiocarbon dating has found it to date from about 2400 BC. It is of similar age to the larger Silbury Hill about west of the town. Marlborough is a suburban and rural community. The local high school is RHAM High School. Duke of Marlborough (pronounced ) is a title in the Peerage of England. It was created by Queen Anne in 1702 for John Churchill, 1st Earl of Marlborough (1650–1722), the noted military leader. In historical texts, unqualified use of the title typically refers to the 1st Duke. The name of the dukedom refers to Marlborough in Wiltshire. The earldom of Marlborough was held by the family of Ley from its creation 1626 until its extinction with the death of the 4th earl in 1679. General John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, 1st Prince of Mindelheim, 1st Count of Nellenburg, Prince of the Holy Roman Empire, (26 May 1650 – 16 June 1722 O.S.) was an English soldier and statesman whose career spanned the reigns of five monarchs. From a gentry family, he served first as a page at the court of the House of Stuart under James, Duke of York, through the 1670s and early 1680s, earning military and political advancement through his courage and diplomatic skill. Churchill's role in defeating the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685 helped secure James on the throne, but he was a key player in the military conspiracy that led to James being deposed during the Glorious Revolution. Marlborough High School is a secondary school in Zimbabwe which is located in a Harare suburb called Marlborough. Marlborough is to the north of Harare City Centre and lies between the roads leading to Chinhoyi and Bindura from Harare. Marlborough High School caters for school children aged between 12 and 19 years. School children of this age will be in Forms 1 to 6 of their secondary school education. Marlborough High School was established before the independence of Zimbabwe and it served mainly white children during the colonial period. Harare (; formerly Salisbury ) is the capital and most populous city of Zimbabwe. Marlborough is a census-designated place (CDP) and the main village in the town of Marlborough in Cheshire County, New Hampshire, United States. The population of the CDP was 1,066 at the 2020 census, out of 2,096 in the entire town. Geography The CDP is in the northwestern part of the town of Marlborough, in the valley of Minnewawa Brook, a west-flowing tributary of The Branch and part of the Connecticut River watershed. The CDP is bordered to the northwest by the city of Keene and to the west by the town of Swanzey.
