Marlborough Cricket Team
The Marlborough cricket team represents the Marlborough Region of the South Island of New Zealand. It competes in the Hawke Cup. Its base is in Blenheim. History Early years A Marlborough Cricket Club was formed in Blenheim in late 1860. The first properly organised match in the region appears to have been held at Blenheim in January 1862, between Blenheim and Picton, in a paddock belonging to the Resident Magistrate, S. L. Muller. Picton won. Marlborough teams travelled to play interprovincial matches against Nelson in Nelson in March 1863 and against Wellington in Wellington in March 1866. Marlborough lost both matches, by 42 runs and 45 runs respectively. Horton Park, Blenheim
Horton Park is a cricket ground in Blenheim, Marlborough, New Zealand. The ground is on Redwood Street, on the southern edge of Blenheim's central business district. The reserve, formerly known as the Domain, was named Horton Park in 1907 after Thomas Horton, the local who had ensured the use of the land as a recreational reserve in the late 19th century. The Marlborough cricket team moved its home ground to Horton Park in late 1919 after the nearby Wairau club's ground was sold for development. The first club match there took place on 22 November 1919. Marlborough played for the first time there a month later, a match against the Thorndon club from Wellington. Horton Park held its first first-class match in December 1972 when Central Districts played Northern Districts in the 1972/73 Plunket Shield. Edgar Neale
Edgar Rollo Neale (24 November 1889 – 25 July 1960), often called Gar Neale, was Mayor and Member of Parliament for Nelson, New Zealand, a strong supporter of the Nelson railway, and a representative cricketer. Background Gar Neale's great grandfather and family migrated to New Zealand from Stroud, Gloucestershire, England, in the 1840s, settling in Auckland. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. Otago Country Cricket Team
The Otago Country cricket team represents the Central Otago and South Otago regions of New Zealand. It competes in the Hawke Cup. Its parent organisation is the Otago Country Cricket Association, which is based in Alexandra. Central Otago The Central Otago Cricket Association was formed in 1946. It achieved Minor Association status with the New Zealand Cricket Council in 1956. Central Otago competed in the Hawke Cup from 1963 to 2006. The Manawatu cricket team represents the Manawatū district of New Zealand. It competes in the Hawke Cup. History Cricket was played in the region in the 1870s. The Palmerston Cricket Club was formed in October 1878. The Manawatu Cricket Association was formed in 1895, made up of six clubs: Feilding, Palmerston North, Colyton, Carnarvon, Cheltenham and Birmingham. Manawatu played in the very first match in the Hawke Cup, when they defeated Wairarapa in December 1910, thanks largely to the bowling of Arthur Ongley, who took 12 wickets. The captain of a cricket team, often referred to as the skipper, is the appointed leader, having several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of the other players. As in other sports, the captain is usually experienced and has good communication skills, and is likely to be one of the most regular members of the team, as the captain is responsible for the team selection. Gary Bartlett
Gary Alex Bartlett (born 3 February 1941) is a former New Zealand cricketer. He played 10 Test matches for New Zealand in the 1960s as a fast bowler. Domestic career Bartlett made his first-class debut for Central Districts in the 1958–59 season aged only 17, and played all four matches for New Zealand in the non-Test series against an Australian XI in the following season. ''Wisden'' described him as "the real discovery of the season". Test cricket is a form of first-class cricket played at international level between teams representing full member countries of the International Cricket Council (ICC). A match consists of four innings (two per team) and is scheduled to last for up to five days. In the past, some Test matches had no time limit and were called Timeless Tests. Arthur Cresswell
Arthur Edward Cresswell (7 August 1917 – 3 August 2002) was a New Zealand cricketer who played for Wellington and was one of the first players who played for Central Districts in the early 1950s. He was the younger brother of Fen Cresswell. A right-arm fast-medium bowler, Cresswell was first selected for Marlborough as an 18-year-old in 1935 from the Wairau Club. During World War II he served in the New Zealand Army and was a leading member of the New Zealand Army XI, along with players such as Bert Sutcliffe and Verdun Scott. After the war Cresswell was unhappy with the opportunities to play regular cricket in Marlborough and decided to play club cricket in Wellington, commuting from Blenheim to Wellington by Tiger Moth aeroplane every weekend.
