Marlboro Nations' Cup
The Philip Morris International was a professional team golf tournament, played from 1972 and 1976. The 1972 and 1973 tournaments were called the Marlboro Nations' Cup. There was no tournament in 1974 but the event was played in 1975 and 1976 under a different name. All events were played in France. The tournament had a knock-out format with up to 16 teams competing. There were two players in each team, each match consisting of a foursomes followed by two singles matches. The 1972 event was played at Mandelieu-la-Napoule near Cannes, the 1973 and 1975 events were played at Hardelot near Boulogne in northern France. In 1976 it was played at Divonne-les-Bains on the Swiss border near Geneva. In 1972 and 1973 all the team were European, with the exception of Morocco who competed in 1972. Golf
Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. Tony Jacklin
Anthony Jacklin CBE (born 7 July 1944) is a retired English golfer. He was the most successful British player of his generation, winning two major championships, the 1969 Open Championship and the 1970 U.S. Open. He was also Ryder Cup captain from 1983 to 1989; Europe winning two and tying another of these four events. Early life and education Jacklin was born on 7 July 1944 in the town of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. His father was a steel worker and his mother Dorothy worked at a market. He attended Henderson Avenue Primary School in the town. Playing career Jacklin turned professional in 1962, becoming an assistant to Bill Shankland at Potters Bar Golf Club. Valentín Barrios
Valentín Barrios González (born 7 April 1942) is a Spanish professional golfer. He won the 1971 Madrid Open, the 1972 Algarve Open and was one of the winning pair in the 1972 Marlboro Nations' Cup. He represented Spain three times in the World Cup. Golf career Barrios was runner-up in the 1963 Open de España but he was at his best during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was runner-up in the 1970 Italian BP Open and the 1970 German Open and won the 1971 Madrid Open and the 1972 Algarve Open. Representing Spain, he partnered with Ángel Gallardo and won the 1972 Marlboro Nations' Cup, beating the Welsh pair of Brian Huggett and David Vaughan in the final. Harry Bannerman
Harry Bannerman (born 5 March 1942) is a Scottish retired professional golfer. He is best known for playing in the 1971 Ryder Cup. Professional career Bannerman turned professional in late 1965, at the age of 23, and became an assistant at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club. Later he was the tournament professional at Banchory and Murcar Links Golf Club and professional at Cruden Bay and at Schloss Mainsondheim in Germany. A back injury curtailed his playing career. Six members of the Great Britain team for the 1971 Ryder Cup were selected from a points list based on a player's best 10 performances in 15 events during the 1971 season, ending with the Benson & Hedges Festival of Golf on 21 August. Brian Barnes (golfer)
Brian William Barnes (3 June 1945 – 9 September 2019) was a professional golfer. He won nine times on the European Tour between 1972 and 1981 and twice won the Senior British Open. Barnes played in six consecutive Ryder Cup matches from 1969 to 1979. He was noted for having beaten Jack Nicklaus twice in one day in singles match play, during the 1975 Ryder Cup on 21 September, winning 4&2 in the morning round and 2&1 in the afternoon session. Johannes Gerardus Maria Dorrestein (9 August 1945 – 5 April 2023) was a Dutch professional golfer. Early life Dorrestein was born in Soest, Netherlands on 9 August 1945. His father was a golf professional. In addition, both of his brothers became golf professionals. Professional career Dorrestein turned pro in 1965. In April 1970 Dorrestein played the Kenya Open. Baldovino Dassù
Baldovino Dassù (born 3 November 1952) is an Italian golfer. Dassù won the 1970 British Youths Open Amateur Championship and played for Italy in that year's Eisenhower Trophy. He turned professional in 1971 and was a regular on the European Tour from its first official season in 1972 until the mid-1980s. His most successful season by far was 1976, when he won his only two European Tour titles at the Dunlop Masters and the Italian Open, which he won by eight shots, and went on to finish ninth on the Order of Merit. Off the tour he won the Italian Professional Championship in 1974, 1976 and 1977. He represented Italy in the Alfred Dunhill Cup twice and in the World Cup of Golf four times. Roberto Bernardini
Roberto Bernardini (born 21 January 1944) is an Italian professional golfer. He represented Italy 9 times in the World Cup between 1966 and 1975. Most of his success came in continental Europe as he won a number of tournaments in his native Italy. He also won the Swiss Open in back to back years, 1968 and 1969. Late in 1969 he won the Agfa-Gevaert Tournament, an international tournament played in West Germany. He scored 281, defeating South Africa's Graham Henning by a stroke. It was his fourth win on the European circuit that year. This excellent play helped Bernardini qualify for the Masters Tournament in 1969 and 1970. Bernardini had some success outside continental Europe, however. He reached the semi-final of the 1970 Long John Scotch Whisky Match Play Championship and finished joint third in the 1972 Sunbeam Electric Scottish Open. John O'Leary (golfer)
John Eudes O'Leary (19 August 1949 – 26 March 2020) was an Irish professional golfer who played on the European Tour through the 1970s and 1980s. In 1976 he won his first European Tour event, the Greater Manchester Open, and in 1982 he became only the third Irishman to win the Carroll's Irish Open, Irish Open. He played in a number of team competitions, representing Great Britain and Ireland in the 1975 Ryder Cup, and playing for Ireland three times in the World Cup (men's golf), World Cup. After retiring as a tournament golfer he was an active administrator, being a director of the European Tour from 1985 to 2019 and being on the Ryder Cup committee.
