Marlboro (, ) is an American brand of cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured by Philip Morris USA (a branch of Altria) within the United States and by Philip Morris International (now separate from Altria) outside the US. The largest Marlboro cigarette manufacturing plant is located in Richmond, Virginia. As of 2017, Marlboro had 40% market share in the US. History In 1846, British tobacconist Phillip Morris opened a shop on Bond Street, London, United Kingdom, selling tobacco and rolled cigarettes. After his death from cancer in 1873, his brother Leopold and widow Margaret continued the business, growing it and opening a factory on Great Marlborough Street, London, from which the name was taken. Philip Morris opened a New York subsidiary in 1902 to sell many of its cigarette brands. Marlboro College
Marlboro College was a private college in Marlboro, Vermont. Founded in 1946, it remained intentionally small, operating as a self-governing community with students following self-designed degree plans culminating in a thesis. In 1998 the college added a graduate school. The college closed at the end of the 2019–2020 academic year and gifted its endowment to Emerson College in Boston to create the Marlboro Institute of Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies at Emerson College. History Marlboro College was founded in 1946 by Walter Hendricks, who had been inspired by his time as director of English at Biarritz American University. Many of the first students were returning World War II veterans. The campus incorporates the buildings of three farms that were on the site at Potash Hill. Marlboro Packard (August 19, 1828 – February 4, 1904) was a master shipbuilder who lived in Searsport, Maine, Searsport, Maine. He managed several economically important shipyards in Searsport. He built several ships including the ship ''Oneida'' in 1877 at the McGilvery Yard. In 1877 he built the ship ''William H. Conner'', which was the last and largest full-rigging, rigged ship built in Searsport. This ship's construction took place at the Carver Yard and cost over $100,000. The half-model of this ship is currently housed at the Penobscot Marine Museum. His parents were Nathan Packard and Mary (Chase) Packard. He married Mary Maria Parke on April 3, 1859. Upper Marlboro, officially the Town of Upper Marlboro, is the seat of Prince George's County, Maryland. Aso of the 2020 census, the population was 652. although Greater Upper Marlboro is many times larger. Etymology Upper Marlboro was established in 1706 as "Marlborough Town", after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. In 1744, the town was renamed to "Upper Marlborough". In the late 19th century, the town's name changed from Upper Marlborough to Upper Marlboro. The name change is linked to a postal clerk who felt that the last three letters, "ugh", did not properly fit on the rubber stamps being used at the time. The Marlboro Music School and Festival is a retreat for advanced classical training and musicianship held for seven weeks each summer in Marlboro, Vermont, in the United States. Public performances are held each weekend while the school is in session, with the programs chosen only a week or so in advance from the sixty to eighty works being currently rehearsed.
