Marks-Hirschfeld Museum Of Medical History
The Marks-Hirschfeld Museum of Medical History is a museum at the University of Queensland Mayne Medical School at 288 Herston Road, Herston, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Operated by volunteers and supported by the University of Queensland Alumni, it has a collection of over 7,000 items of medical memorabilia, medical and surgical instruments. The focus is on the study of medical history in Queensland, but the collection includes items with broader significance to Australia and internationally. History The museum was established 1950 with donations of material from Dr Alexander Hammett Marks and Dr John Hardie from the collection of his father Sir David Hardie, Queensland’s first medical knight. University of Queensland Mayne Medical School is a heritage-listed university building at 288 Herston Road, Herston, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Raymond Clare Nowland and built from 1938 to 1939. It is also known as University of Queensland Medical School. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 24 June 1999. Herston is an inner suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Herston had a population of 2,215 people. Geography Herston is located by car north of the Brisbane GPO. The area of Herston includes the Herston Health Precinct on its eastern side. Alexander Marks
Alexander Hammett Marks, (6 August 1880 – 18 January 1954) was an Australian physician and military officer. Serving during the First World War, Marks was mentioned twice in despatches, and awarded the Distinguished Service Order, the Croix de Guerre, and made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his service. Early life Marks was born in Brisbane on 6 August 1880. He was the first son of Dr Charles Ferdinand Marks, a surgeon and later member of the Queensland Legislative Council, and his wife Elizabeth (née Stodart). He was the elder brother of Edward (born 1882), and was educated at the Brisbane Grammar School. After completing secondary education, he travelled to Dublin where he studied medicine at Trinity College, graduating with an M. D. degree in 1905. Sir David Hardie (4 June 1856 – 11 November 1945) was an Australian medical practitioner. Hardie was born on at New Spynie near Elgin, Morayshire, Scotland, son of John Hardie, farmer, and his wife Margaret (née Masson). He attended school in Elgin before furthering his education at the University of Aberdeen ( M.B., Ch.B., 1878), he worked there for two years as a demonstrator in anatomy, then started general practice in 1880 at Forres, Morayshire. On 6 June 1883 he married Marianne Jeans at Nairn. She was the daughter of Alexander Jeans and Isabella Blythe. His eldest daughter M.I.H. Hardie, (known as Helena) was born in 1886 at Forres. After gaining his medical doctorate at Aberdeen in 1887, David Hardie emigrated with his wife and daughter to Melbourne, Australia. Franz Konrad Saddler Hirschfeld CBE (1904-1987) was an Australian medical practitioner and surgeon. He pioneered thoracic surgeries in Australia. He became a university academic, administrator and medical historian. Early life Franz Konrad Saddler Hirschfeld was born on 26 April 1904 in Brisbane, Queensland, the son of Dr Eugen Hirschfeld, a Prussian physician and Consul to Brisbane, and his Australian wife Annie. Konrad attended the Brisbane Normal School and Brisbane Grammar School. He won a scholarship to attend the University of Queensland completing his first year of a science degree with the intention of pursuing medicine like his father Eugen Hirschfeld and brother Otto Hirschfeld in 1924. He moved to Melbourne and entered Trinity College in 1925 while studying medicine at the University of Melbourne, where he obtained first class honours in anatomy in 1926.
