Markhor
The markhor (''Capra falconeri'') is a large ''Capra'' species native to Central Asia, the Karakoram, and the Himalayas. It is listed on the IUCN Red List as Near Threatened since 2015. The markhor is the national animal of Pakistan, where it is also known as the screw horn or screw-horned goat, ''mārkhor'' () in Urdu from Classical Persian. Description Markhor stand at the shoulder, are long and weigh from . They have the highest maximum shoulder height among the species in the genus ''Capra'', but is surpassed in length and weight by the Siberian ibex. The coat is of a grizzled, light brown to black colour, and is smooth and short in summer, while growing longer and thicker in winter. The fur of the lower legs is black and white. Kashmir Markhor
The Kashmir markhor, Pir Panjal markhor, or flare-horned markhor (''Capra falconeri cashmiriensis'') is a possible subspecies of ''Capra falconeri'' endemic to the Western Himalayas of India and Pakistan. Many, including the IUCN, do not consider it a separate subspecies. These markhors are hunted as part of a community-based hunting program. In the past, according to a survey conducted by CITES and the WWF with help from the KPK wildlife department, only 300 Markhors were counted. Then government started the community-based hunting program and issued 4 hunting permits per year. It also required that 80% of the revenue collected through trophy hunting be donated to the local community, which encouraged locals to stop poaching it as a source of food. This hunting program succeeded and a more recent survey counted 4000 markhors. Astor Markhor
The Astor markhor or flare-horned markhor (''Capra falconeri falconeri'') is a subspecies of the markhor, native to Kashmir and northern Pakistan. To the west it reaches the easternmost parts of Afghanistan. The range of the Astor markhor is very scattered. At one time considered an "endangered species", conservation efforts have had some success and the largest subpopulation in Pakistan may now exceed 1000 individuals. As a result, the International Union for Conservation of Nature has rated its status as "near-threatened". Ecology The Astor markhor lives in the scrubland and open woodland that clothe the rugged slopes of the mountains among which it lives at altitudes of up to . ''Capra'' is a genus of mammals, the goats, composed of up to nine species, including the markhor and many species known as ibexes. The domestic goat (''Capra hircus'') is a domesticated species derived from the wild goat (''Capra aegagrus''). Evidence of goat domestication dates back more than 8,500 years. Wild goats are animals of mountain habitats. They are very agile and hardy, able to climb on bare rock and survive on sparse vegetation. Himalayan Wolf
The Himalayan wolf (''Canis lupus chanco'') is a canine of debated taxonomy. It is distinguished by its genetic markers, with mitochondrial DNA indicating that it is genetically basal to the Holarctic gray wolf, genetically the same wolf as the Tibetan and Mongolian wolf, and has an association with the African wolf (''Canis lupaster''). No striking morphological differences are seen between the wolves from the Himalayas and those from Tibet.
