Marked Tree is a city in Poinsett County, Arkansas, United States, along the St. Francis River, at the mouth of the Little River. The population was 2,566 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Jonesboro, Arkansas, metropolitan statistical area. Geologically, the area marks the southern end of the New Madrid Fault. Toponymy The city got its name from a tree located on the bank of the St. Francis River until 1890 that had been blazed to mark a section of the river where Native Americans could walk about across land to reach the Little River and avoid paddling upstream. Poinsett County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 24,583. The county seat is Harrisburg. Poinsett County is included in the Jonesboro–Paragould Combined Statistical Area. History Poinsett County was formed on February 28, 1838, and named for Joel Roberts Poinsett, U.S. Secretary of War. County business was initially conducted in the county judge's home until first court was held in Bolivar, upon completion of a courthouse in 1839. County government was moved in 1859 to Harrisburg, a more central locale designated as the new county seat. Poinsett County acquired its current boundaries in the years following this change, as portions were assigned to newly organized counties. Geography Trumann is located in the Arkansas Delta at (35.676313, -90.519183). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land. Tyronza is a city in Poinsett County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 762 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Jonesboro, Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area and is in the Arkansas Delta. Geography Tyronza is located at (35.487, -90.357). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.1 km (1.6 mi2), all land. History Tyronza is one of the oldest cities within Poinsett County with its origins dating back to the late 19th century. Marked Tree High School is a comprehensive public high school for students in grades 7 through 12 in Marked Tree, Arkansas, United States. Marked Tree is one of five public high schools in Poinsett County and is the only high school in the Marked Tree School District. The school is accredited by AdvancED since 1965. It was first established in 1914. Academics The assumed course of study follows the Smart Core curriculum developed by the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE), which requires students to complete at least 22 units to graduate. Students complete regular (core and career focus) courses and exams and may select Advanced Placement coursework and exams that provide an opportunity for college credit.
