Mark Whiteley
Mark Whiteley is an American skateboarder, photographer, writer, and former editor-in-chief of Slap Magazine. Skateboarding Whiteley was a video filmer during high school and college. He worked for 411, Think, Real, Stereo, Thrasher, Santa Cruz, and other companies. Working in the Northern California skateboarding industry, Whiteley got to know a good deal of skaters and others through being out skating and filming. Slap Magazine Lance Dawes, the original editor of '' SLAP,'' was looking for an assistant-type editor when Phil Shao and Paul Zuanich recommended Whiteley to Dawes. After a positive meeting with Fausto Vitello, Whiteley started working at Slap Magazine on August 10, 1998 as managing editor. One year after Whiteley began working at Slap, Lance Dawes moved down to Los Angeles and Whiteley was handed the editor-in-chief reigns. Slap (magazine)
''Slap Magazine'' was an American skate magazine created by Kevin Thatcher and Fausto one late night when they sparked an idea to create their own competition. At the time they ran Thrasher Skateboard Mag. The next day they put Lance Dawes in charge of it (1992), while he worked for Thrasher. Slap was distributed by High Speed Productions for 16 years. The Slap Magazine website still serves as a highly popular message board for skateboarding content and conversation. Magazine history Dawes worked at Thrasher as a darkroom technician, developing film and printing for the magazine. It was Thrasher's idea to start a new magazine, choosing Dawes to spearhead it because he was the youngest dude that worked at Thrasher, rode for Dogtown skateboards, and skated everyday, often skating at Embarcadero. Skate Video
A skate video is a movie of or about skateboarding typically showing new tricks and a series of skateboarders in a montage set to music. History Released in 1965, the short film ''Skaterdater'' is credited as the first film to depict skateboarding and therefore the first ''skate video.'' In 2015, The Berrics campaigned for the film's acceptance into the National Film Registry. However, the Powell Peralta company is often credited as creating the first skate videos proper that were not a part of a fictional film or a documentary. Their first video, ''The Bones Brigade Video Show'' (1984), was expected to sell just 300 copies on VHS, but it sold 30,000. ''411 Video Magazine'' (commonly abbreviated as ''411VM'' or ''411'') was a skateboarding video series. 411 was created in 1993 by Josh Friedberg and Steve Douglas. ''411'' released four issues per year, until its last issue, issue 67 was released in 2005. Prior to ''411'', professional skateboarders only showcased their video footage in major video releases, which were sometimes spread years apart. Lance Dawes
Lance Dawes is an American skateboarder, photographer, writer, studio director, co-founder and former editor-in-chief of ''Slap Magazine''. Skateboarding and photography Dawes was raised in Washington DC., where he grew up in the DC punk scene of the 1980s. In his late teens, Dawes became a sponsored skateboarder for Dogtown, Vans and Independent Trucks. He moved to San Francisco to study film at the University of San Francisco. While in school, Dawes worked as a darkroom tech and stat operator at ''Thrasher Magazine'' from October 1990 to January 1992. Dawes documented the San Francisco skate scene of the early 1990s. Phil Shao (December 28, 1973 - August 23, 1998) was a goofy-footed professional skateboarder and journalist from Redwood City, California. Fausto Vitello
Fausto Vitello (August 7, 1946 – April 22, 2006) was an Argentine-American businessman, magazine publisher, and skateboarder. Vitello was the creator of ''Thrasher'' magazine and co-creator of Independent trucks. Early life Vitello was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but his family left when he was 9 to escape the political terror of the Revolución Libertadora. His family moved to San Francisco, in the U.S. state of California, and he was raised on Frederick Street in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. Vitello did not speak any English upon arriving. He taught himself English by listening to San Francisco Giants broadcasts, starting a lifelong love for the Giants.
