Lebanon is a home rule-class city and the county seat of Marion County, Kentucky, in the United States. The population was 5,539 at the 2010 census. The Twixt Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in November at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. It is a restricted stakes race open to Maryland-bred fillies three years old and up and is run at seven furlongs on the dirt. An ungraded stakes race, it offers a purse of $75,000 as of 2017. The race was named in honor of the filly Twixt, a Maryland-bred Champion each year that she raced, from 1972 through 1975. Mrs. John M. Franklin, Mr. and Mrs. John Merryman, and themselves owned her. She had the highest career earnings of any mare bred in Maryland when she retired, totaling $699,143. She was Maryland-bred "Horse-of-the-Year" in 1973 and 1974. Federico Tesio Stakes
The Federico Tesio Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Laurel Park in Laurel, Maryland over a distance of miles on the dirt for three-year-old horses. Run during the latter part of April/early May, the race can be a stepping stone to the second leg of the U.S. Triple Crown series, the Preakness Stakes. Local patrons refer to the Tesio Stakes as the "Preakness Trial." Since 2016, it has been a "Win and You're In" qualifier for the Preakness. Laurel Turf Cup Stakes
The Japan Turf Cup Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run, held annually at Maryland's Laurel Park Racecourse. Open to horses age three and older, it is currently run on grass at a distance of one and one-half miles. Previously run as the Laurel Turf Cup Stakes, it was renamed the Japan Turf Cup Stakes in 2019. The race was a grade three race from 1985 through 2000. The Turf Cup was taken off the grass and run on the dirt of the main track on the following years; 1971, 72, 75, 76, 85, 86, 90, 96 and 1997. The race was not run between 2007-2010. It was announced by Laurel Park that the famed race would be restored in 2012 and run on October 27 at 12 furlongs and named the Laurel Turf Cup Stakes. Fire Plug Stakes
The Fire Plug Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held in January at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. It is open to horses four-year-olds and up and is run at six furlongs on the dirt. An ungraded stakes, it offers a purse of $125,000. The race was named in honor of Fire Plug, a quick and durable horse that ran throughout the east coast from age three to age seven. He was campaigned by his breeder and owner, Arthur Appleton, and trained by Bob Camac. The gelding won or placed in 50 of his 54 lifetime starts, most of those races being sprints. Half of his 29 victories came in graded stakes races, including the J. Edgar Hoover Stakes, the Maryland Breeders' Cup Handicap and the Roman Handicap. The Blue Hen Stakes at Delaware Park Racetrack is an American Thoroughbred horse race for two-year-old fillies held annually in early October at Delaware Park Racetrack in Stanton, Delaware. A non-graded stakes event raced on dirt, since 2004 it has been contested at a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles (8.5 furlongs). The Blue Hen is named for the horse breeding term "Blue Hen," meaning a mare who has proved herself exceptional in producing high quality foals, almost regardless of which stallion might be the sire. The Astarita Stakes was an American Thoroughbred horse race run between 1946 and 2005 at New York (state), New York's Aqueduct Racetrack in South Ozone Park, Queens and at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, Elmont. Open to two-year-old Filly, fillies, it was a Horse racing#Flat racing, sprint race contested on dirt over a distance of six and a half furlongs. It offered a purse of $100,000. Maryland Million Lassie is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in October since 1986 primarily at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland, Laurel, Maryland or at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, Baltimore. To be eligible for the Maryland Million Nursery, a horse must be sired by a stallion who stands in Maryland. Due to that restriction the race is classified as a non-graded or "listed" stakes race and is not eligible for grading by the American Graded Stakes Committee. Marshua Stakes
The Marshua Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in February at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. The race is open to three-year-old fillies and is run at six furlongs on the dirt. An ungraded stakes race, it offers a purse of $100,000. The race was named in honor of the great race mare Marshua in 1987. Marshua was foaled in 1962 and was an American Thoroughbred racehorse sired by Nashua out of Emardee, by Heliopolis. Marshua was ranked second in her class of two-year-olds. She made 16 starts in 1964 and was in the money 15 times, or 94% of the time. The highlight of that season was her victory in the prestigious Selima Stakes at Laurel Park Racecorse in Maryland. The Laurel Dash Stakes is a Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Laurel Park Racecourse at Laurel, Maryland. An ungraded stakes open to horses age three and older, it is raced on turf over a distance of five and one-half furlongs. The Jameela Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in August at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. It is open to fillies and mare three years old and up and is raced on turf. For 2016, the distance is 6 furlongs. The race was named in honor of Jameela, whose name is Arabic for "beautiful." Jameela was the first Maryland-bred horse to go over the $1,000,000.00 in earnings. Jameela was the daughter of Rambuntious and Asbury Mary and was foaled in 1976. She was retired after four seasons with career earnings of $1,038,704. She finished fourth or better in 52 of her 58 starts. She was raced during part of her career by her breeder, Betty Worthington of Bel Air, Maryland. Jameela was sold to Peter Brant in 1981 for $804,0000.
