Mark Oliphant College
Mark Oliphant College is a public school in the northern suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. It teaches students from birth to year 12 and is named after Sir Mark Oliphant. Mark Oliphant College opened in the newly developed area of Munno Para during 2011, after having used two of the former sites since the beginning of 2010. Mark Oliphant
Sir Marcus Laurence Elwin Oliphant, (8 October 1901 – 14 July 2000) was an Australian physicist and humanitarian who played an important role in the first experimental demonstration of nuclear fusion and in the development of nuclear weapons. Born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia, Oliphant graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1922. He was awarded an 1851 Exhibition Scholarship in 1927 on the strength of the research he had done on mercury, and went to England, where he studied under Sir Ernest Rutherford at the University of Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory. There, he used a particle accelerator to fire heavy hydrogen nuclei (deuterons) at various targets. He discovered the respective nuclei of helium-3 (helions) and of tritium (tritons). He also discovered that when they reacted with each other, the particles that were released had far more energy than they started with. Munno Para, South Australia
Munno Para is a northern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the City of Playford. In the local Kaurna dialect, Munno Para means ''golden wattle creek''. The name refers to either the Gawler River (which starts at the confluence of the South Para River and North Para River) or the Little Para River from which the much larger cadastral Hundred of Munno Para derives its name. History Until 1997, Munno Para was part of the City of Munno Para, formerly the district councils of Munno Para East and Munno Para West which were established in 1853 and 1854 on land bounded by the cadastral Hundred of Munno Para. The older part of the suburb itself began from a subdivision in 1955 and the suburb was named in 1978. Until the locality was urbanised from 1955, Munno Para was part of the farming district north of the township of Smithfield. Smithfield Plains Post Office opened on 7 December 1967 and was located in the Shopping Centre on the corner of Peachey and Crittenden Roads.
