Marjet Ockels
Marjet Joan Ockels (12 November 1943 – 14 May 2016) was a Dutch politician. She was a member of the House of Representatives between 1991 and 1994. She started as member of the Labour Party, but left in 1993 and continued as an independent. Career Ockels was born on 12 November 1943 in Almelo. She worked at a general practice clinic for twenty years. She was a member of the municipal council of Ulrum for the Labour Party between 3 September 1982 and 1 January 1990, from 29 April 1986 she concurrently served as alderwoman for education, social affairs, employment and fishery. Afterwards she continued as a member of the municipal council of the expanded municipality of Ulrum, which later became the De Marne. Her time in office ended on 12 April 1994. Ockels served in the House of Representatives from 4 June 1991 to 17 May 1994. On 21 September 1993 she left the Labour party and continued as an independent. House Of Representatives (Netherlands)
The House of Representatives (, pronounced ; commonly referred to as the ', literally "Second Chamber of the States General") is the lower house of the bicameral parliament of the Netherlands, the States General, the other one being the Senate. It has 150 seats, which are filled through elections using party-list proportional representation. Generally, the house is located in the Binnenhof in The Hague, however, it has temporarily moved to the former building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Bezuidenhoutseweg 67 in the Hague while the Binnenhof is being renovated. Name Although the body is officially called the "House of Representatives" in English, it is not a direct translation of its official Dutch name, the "Second Chamber of the States General", "Second Chamber" or more colloquially just the "Chamber". 1994 Dutch General Election
General elections were held in the Netherlands on 3 May 1994. Dieter Nohlen & Philip Stöver (2010) ''Elections in Europe: A data handbook'', p1396 The Labour Party emerged as the largest party, winning 37 of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives.Nohlen & Stöver, p1414 The election resulted in significant losses for both the Labour Party and the Christian Democratic Appeal. The two liberal parties, People's Party for Freedom and Democracy and Democrats 66 made large gains, whilst two pro-elderly parties and the Socialist Party all passed the electoral threshold to win seats. The formation of a government coalition was arduous but after four months the First Kok cabinet was formed. It was an unprecedented coalition of the two liberal parties and Labour. Wubbo Johannes Ockels (28 March 1946 – 18 May 2014) was a Dutch physicist and astronaut with the European Space Agency who, in 1985, became the first Dutch citizen in space when he flew on STS-61-A as a payload specialist. He later became professor of aerospace engineering at Delft University of Technology. Education and early life Ockels was born in Almelo, Netherlands, but considered Groningen to be his hometown. He obtained his MSc degree in physics and mathematics in 1973 and subsequently a PhD degree in the same subjects in 1978 from the University of Groningen. His thesis was based on experimental work at the Nuclear-physics Accelerator Institute (KVI) in Groningen. Marius Jacobus "Piet" de Visser (16 April 1931 – 19 December 2012) was a Dutch politician for the Labour Party (PvdA). Life and career De Visser was born and died in Rotterdam. Almelo
Almelo () is a municipality and a city in the eastern Netherlands. The main population centres in the town are Aadorp, Almelo, Mariaparochie, and Bornerbroek. Almelo has about 72,000 inhabitants in the middle of the rolling countryside of Twente, with the industrial centres of Enschede and Hengelo as close neighbours but also with tourist towns like Ootmarsum, Delden and Markelo only a bicycle ride away. Almelo received city rights in 1394. Within the city limits lies the castle of the Counts of Almelo.
