Marius Chaîne
Abbé Marius Chaîne (10 August 1873 – 19 January 1960) was a French scholar of Ethiopic and Coptic philology. Life Marius Chaîne was born in 1873 in Tarascon, Bouches-du-Rhône. He studied at the School of Higher Studies at the Sorbonne, and the School of the Louvre in Paris. In 1897 he was ordained and joined the Society of Jesus, but abandoned it after World War I. Chaîne was a professor of Oriental languages at Saint Joseph University, Beirut; the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome; and the Pontifical Biblical Institute. He penned the article "Ethiopia" for the ''Catholic Encyclopedia''. He devoted his life to Ethiopic and Coptic philology.Ficquet 2003. Works * 1907: ''Grammaire éthiopienne''. Tarascon (; ), sometimes referred to as Tarascon-sur-Rhône, is a commune situated at the extreme west of the Bouches-du-Rhône department of France in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Inhabitants are referred to as Tarasconnais or Tarasconnaises. The patron saint of the city is Martha of Bethany, whose motto is "Concordia Felix". Geography Tarascon is located south of Avignon and north of Arles, on the left (east) bank of the river Rhône. On the other side is the similarly sized town of Beaucaire in the ''département'' of Gard, ''région'' of Occitania. Directly opposite each other and connected by several bridges, Beaucaire and Tarascon effectively constitute one town, with about 30,000 inhabitants. An irrigation canal of 18,00 km length rejoins the Rhone near Tarascon. Climate The climate in the Alpilles is considered Mediterranean. The winters are mild and dry and the summers hot and dry.
